Loyola journalism professor receives $34,955 humanities grant
January 11, 2008
A $34,955 grant was awarded to Loyola University New Orleans associate professor Leslie Parr, Ph.D., from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities (LEH) for a project entitled “Looking at History: Photography and the American Past,” in support of the Teacher Institutes for Advanced Study.
Since 1985, the LEH has provided Louisiana’s full-time elementary, middle, and high school teachers, administrators, and librarians in the public, private, and parochial schools with an opportunity to participate in free seminars that challenge teachers to discuss and think critically and intensively about traditional and developing disciplines in the humanities.
“I have found these institutes to be very rewarding teaching experiences. Loyola has been very supportive of the LEH institutes,” said Parr. Each participant will receive a monetary stipend and free textbooks from LEH. Institute participants can earn three hours of graduate credit in English at Loyola University, and Loyola will provide full tuition waivers for participants enrolled for graduate credit.
In order to receive the grant, Parr had to create the institute, write a narrative explaining what she wanted to teach, and create a detailed syllabus and plan for marketing the institute to local eligible teachers.
Parr is the Shawn M. Donnelley Endowed Professor of Nonprofit Communications and director of the Shawn M. Donnelley Center for Nonprofit Communications and Journalism Sequence Head. This will be the fourth LEH institute Parr has taught. She also co-taught a Teaching American History teacher institute.
