Wolfpack Wellness Program participates in Corporate Cup Race to benefit YMCA Activate America
December 14, 2007
On Sunday December 2, Kristi Salvaggio, associate director for wellness, organized the participation of more than 20 Loyola University of New Orleans community members in the Corporate Cup Race to benefit YMCA Activate America. The goal was to raise money for the YMCA, encourage the Loyola community to be active, and have Loyola represented in a community event.
Loyola University participants included three students from the cross country team, sociology freshman Rachel Leonard, English junior Ben Sines, history freshman Sean Meleen, along with faculty, staff members, friends, and children. Each participant’s entry fee raised money for YMCA Activate America.
Loyola has had a team in the Corporate Cup Race in the past, but has not participated in recent years. Salvaggio took on the newly created, full-time position of associate director for wellness in August 2007, after having worked at Loyola on a part-time basis since 2000.
Salvaggio garnered interested for the event through a campus-wide e-mail, recruitment of colleagues from the Division of Student Affairs, and through coordination with cross country coach Al Seither. This was one of Salvaggio’s first campus wide wellness initiatives as a part of the new Wolfpack Wellness Program.
Growing up, Salvaggio became familiar with the race because both her parents participated in the event each year, which makes having her own team with Loyola particularly significant.
The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Wellness provides opportunities for Loyola students, faculty, staff, and alumni to participate in competitive and noncompetitive, organized and informal sports and fitness activities.
