Annual Black Student Union Scholarship Gala to raise funds for SaveDarfur
November 2, 2007
This year’s Loyola University New Orleans Black Student Union (BSU) Annual Scholarship Gala will raise funds for the SaveDarfur project. The gala will be held November 16, from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m., at the Musee Conti Wax Museum, 917 Conti Street.
Traditionally, the scholarship gala celebrates the annual scholarship awarding. This year, the ninth annual gala will also raise funds to be donated to the SaveDarfur project, for which the BSU has been fundraising throughout the semester. The Save Darfur Coalition's mission is to raise public awareness about the ongoing genocide in Darfur and to mobilize a unified response to the atrocities that threaten the lives of two million people in the Darfur region.
This year’s theme will be a Masquerade, coinciding with the event’s location. The Musee Conti Wax Museum displays New Orleans’ rich traditions of elaborate attire and decorations, which guests at the gala will be able to explore before enjoying dinner and hearing a speaker from the SaveDarfur project.
The BSU, a student-run organization, provides social, cultural, educational, and community service opportunities related to African-American interests in order to increase the understanding of African-American culture and its significant contributions to society and history. The annual BSU scholarship will be awarded this year to one undergraduate students who is an active, paid members of the BSU and has an overall GPA of 3.0. Applicants fill out an application form and submit a 1,000-word essay on a yearly topic (this year’s topic was Darfur). Awards may be used to supplement either tuition expenses or textbook fees.
Shuttles will transport guests from the Mercy Hall parking lot to the Musee Conti Wax Museum between 6:45 and 7:45 p.m. Ticket prices are $15 for Loyola students, $20 for non-Loyola students and adults, $25 for Loyola student couples, $35 for adult/non-Loyola student couples, and $130 for a table (10 people per table).
