Study Abroad and Internship Opportunities
Study Abroad
Our
majors are encouraged to participate in study abroad programs, whether
through the various Loyola Study
Abroad Programs or through programs offered by other institutions.
The following programs are affiliated with the Department of Modern Foreign
Languages and Literatures.
Semester Programs
Loyola participates in the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP), which allows our students to attend any of a large number of universities around the world by paying their regular Loyola tuition (including financial aid), housing and board. For general information about the exchange opportunities contact our Department or the Center for International Education. We also recommend a semester program at the Free University in Berlin known as FU-BEST, which is the successor to the former Loyola in Berlin program and offers an excellent program that includes courses in English. For more information on this and other programs in German-speaking countries see the page on Study in Germany/Austria.
Summer Programs
The Loyola Spain Summer Program consists of four weeks in July and offers 6 credit hours. Students study in Avila, Spain, a provincial capital located in central Spain, about one hour from Madrid. Avila is a national historical heritage city, still surrounded by its medieval city walls. Saturday trips include Segovia, El Escorial, the Prado Museum in Madrid, and Carmelite sites in villages nearby. Housing and classes are located in the monastery/student residence of Santo Tomás. All courses are taught in Spanish. For more information, contact Dr. Doll.
Programs in France, Belgium and Canada are provided through the auspices of CODOFIL (Council for the Development of French in Louisiana). Since 1978, as a member of the Louisiana Consortium of Colleges and Universities, Loyola has assisted students in receiving scholarships from foreign governments to study abroad. Presently most students spend the month of July studying in Liège or Mons, Belgium. Students who have completed one year of college French or the equivalent may participate in these programs without a scholarship. All courses are taught in French, and students receive 6 credit hours. For more information on these programs and also other opportunities to study in French-speaking countries, contact Fr. Rogers or Dr. Mabe.
The Loyola University Americans in Paris Program is located in the heart of Paris, and offers English, history, and French common curriculum courses. Housing and classes are located in the FIAP Jean Monet residence in the 14th arrondissement. The program includes day trips to Chartres and Giverny. Students receive 6 credit hours. For more information, contact Dr. McCay or Dr. Kornovich.
The Summer Session in Asian Studies is offered at Sophia University, the Jesuit University in Tokyo. The six-week program offers courses in Japanese, economics, business, art, history, as well as language and literature. For more information, contact Fr. Farge.

Internships
Our students are often able to do an internship for class credit, applying the language they have studied to a working environment. The normal internship consists of 120 hours work for 3 credit hours, usually with an accompanying journal or other written work.
French Consulate in New Orleans (Contact Dr. Mabe)
German American Cultural Center in Gretna (Contact Dr. Dewell)
Hispanic Apostolate (Contact Dr. Doll)
Other past internships include area elementary and middle schools (Audubon French-American School, Metairie Park Country Day, Chalmette Middle School), New Orleans International Airport, receptionist desk, and La Prensa New Orleans, bilingual monthly newspaper.
The French Ministry of Education offers English assistant posts in French schools to graduates or undergraduates majoring in French. For more information: www.frenculture.org.
Service Learning
Service Learning options exist in some of our classes. For example, in SPAN A200, some of Dr. Doll's students tutored 2nd-graders on how to read with the STAIR (Start the Adventure in Reading) program locally. If you are interested in service, ask your professor about Service Learning!
Student Research
MFLL faculty direct Honors Theses and Senior Theses written in French, German, Japanese and Spanish. The latter are an option available to our majors, especially those who plan to pursue graduate studies.
