Programs of Study
Majors
The department offers majors in French, German, Russian, Spanish and a contract major in Japanese.
Students choosing Russian as a major may take only the first year of study at Loyola (Russian 100 and 101) but must complete the major at Tulane University as part of a cooperative degree program.
Minors
Students may also minor in the above languages, as well as in Italian. It should be noted, however, that only First-Year Italian (Italian 100 and 101) is offered at Loyola. Students wishing to minor in Italian must complete their studies at Tulane University. The department also participates in a minor program in Latin American and Medieval studies.
Requirements for Majors and Minors
Depending on previous study or the results of a placement exam, students wishing to major in a language take a maximum of 36 and a minimum of 30 hours in the major language. There is also an adjunct requirement for majors -- one 300 level course in a second language taught by the department. Depending on previous study or the results of a placement exam, this adjunct requirement ranges from a maximum of 15 hours, for those who have had no previous study of the second language, to a minimum of 3 hours. Students choosing to double major in MFLL and another department in the university are exempt from this adjunct requirement.
Students wishing to minor in a language normally take a maximum of 24 hours and minimum of 21 hours. In some cases, a maximum of 6 hours may be taken outside the department in related courses in linguistics or history and civilization.
