Courses
Courses for international students, of whom 90% are from the United States, will include Spanish courses and courses from the disciplines of journalism and mass communications, architecture, economics, education, history, law, political science, sociology, and visual arts, some in Spanish and some in English. During the semester hundreds of other courses and other disciplines taught in Spanish can be selected from the Ibero's regular offerings.
In the summer session most of the courses from disciplines other than Spanish are usually given in English; in the fall and spring semester courses in disciplines other than Spanish are usually available in both English and Spanish. New courses not listed below may appear from one term to another. A standard load in the summer is two courses (6 semester hours), or three courses (9 semester hours) if enrolled in the language immersion program; in the fall and spring semesters it is five to six courses (15-18 semester hours). Unless otherwise noted, all courses will carry three semester hours of Loyola undergraduate credit; All courses will appear on an official Loyola transcript, and all classes will be two hours in length. During the summer term classes are for six weeks, five days-a-week, and are scheduled from 9-11; 11-1; and 1-3. During the summer Loyola's Intensive Spanish Program is a language immersion program of three courses (9 semester hours) structured for an optimal achievement of Spanish proficiency for the beginning, intermediate, and advanced student.
Students should have intermediate Spanish to participate in the fall semester. Students with no prior Spanish can participate in the summer program although beginning Spanish would be recommended. Students participating in the year-long program should ideally begin their cycle of courses with the language immersion program.
Service Learning
Every effort is made to make service learning an optional part of every course in the Mexico Program. Service Learning integrates community service with academic instruction with a focus on critical, reflective thinking as well as personal and civic responsibility. Students choosing the Service Learning option are provided opportunities to address actual community needs in one or more Latin American or Mexican settings while gaining valuable hands-on experience or reflection that enhances their educational goals.
Other Courses
In addition to the above courses international students attending the Ibero can also take any of the regular courses offered by the individual departments of the Ibero and that Mexicans attending the Ibero take as a part of their degree program. There are hundreds of these courses from many disciplines. Many of them are about Mexico and Latin America, are taught by famous Latin American scholars and intellectuals, and can not be duplicated elsewhere. International students should consult with the individual departments of the Ibero and with the Director and faculty of the Mexico Program before they select these courses. There may be prerequisites. Also, since international students are competing against native Spanish speakers, they should have advanced Spanish skills.
