New Orleans and Activites

New Orleans: An International City

imageWith its colorful French and Spanish colonial history, New Orleans is a charming international city offering visitors the opportunity to experience the variety of U.S. life. You can explore Louisiana culture and customs from the French Quarter to the old cotton and sugar plantations up river from the city.

New Orleans is famous for its music and festivals, its beautiful architecture, and its great food. The city’s restaurants are famous the world over for their creative cuisine featuring international and Creole styles of cooking. Our fresh, spicy seafood is always a favorite. Jazz, rhythm and blues, and many other kinds of music can be heard everywhere, in clubs and on the street. Festivals, such as Mardi Gras and the Jazz and Heritage Festival, attract visitors from around the world, making New Orleans one of the world’s leading tourist centers and a great place to study English.

Climate: Outdoor Activity Year-Round

The climate in New Orleans is semitropical, making it possible to enjoy out-door activities year-round. Fall and spring are very beautiful with bright, warm days and cool nights. The winter is short, although there are sometimes periods when the temperature drops to freezing for a short time. The summers are tropically warm and humid, but virtually all facilities are air-conditioned.

Cultural Activities: Learn About the U.S. and Have Fun

imageIn addition to the tutors, LIEP offers you many opportunities to practice English outside the classroom. When you arrive, you will be oriented to the program, the university, and the city through tours and other activities. Extracurricular programs introduce you to U.S. customs, history, traditions, and holidays, as well as the culture of New Orleans. Activities include tours of plantation houses, the French Quarter, swamps, museums, beach trips, the Superdome, restaurants, music clubs, and other places of interest. LIEP teachers, staff, or tutors accompany you on these activities. There are also many opportunities to hear jazz, Cajun and Dixieland music, attend films, lectures, dinners, and many other types of activities both on and off campus.

Tutors: Valuable Friends

A unique and very popular feature of LIEP is the tutorial program. The tutors are advanced Loyola students, all native speakers of English, who have a special interest in language teaching and in other cultures. You meet individually with your tutor twice a week for additional conversation and practice outside the classroom. Your tutor can advise you about day-to-day concerns such as shopping and entertainment and answer any questions about customs and culture in the U.S. Your tutor often becomes a valuable friend, and many LIEP students keep in touch with their tutors long after they have returned to their home countries.
