Our Mission
Loyola University offers an interdisciplinary minor in Latin American Studies with the aim of fostering our students’ understanding and appreciation of Latin American culture, society, and history. Latin America, a major U.S. trading power, comprises of 26 nations with a population of 455 million. Loyola is located in a region with many historical, cultural, and socioeconomic ties to Latin America, including an immigrant population of some 125,000 Latin Americans. The university is aware of the need to enrich knowledge and understanding of this important region.
A minor in Latin American Studies offers students the opportunity to participate in a program that draws on faculty from several departments. The minor offers a specific concentration that can complement a wide variety of majors. It is a significant component in a liberal education and it is specially useful for students contemplating careers in business, commerce, government, research, or teaching.
Students who choose to minor in Latin American Studies are offered a flexible program that includes an advanced proficiency in Spanish. Study abroad in Latin America, such as Loyola’s program in Mexico City, is encouraged and can be used to help complete the minor.
