The Tenth Year [2016-2017]

In addition to participating in advocacy efforts across the Gulf South States and continuing to publish articles in the JustSouth Quarterly, E-newsletter, and other external publications, JSRI fellows gave the following presentations:

Fall 2016- Summer 2017

August 11- Dr. Weishar was interviewed by Catholic News Service for an article on a proposed ban on refugees from the Middle East.

September 8- Fr. Kammer and Ms. Donovan released the results of the 2016 State of Working MS . 

September 9- Dr. Weishar provided testimony to the Louisiana Senate Committee on Judiciary C on the need to show mercy and provide parole opportunities for juveniles convicted of capital crimes.

September 15- Dr. Weishar and Dr. Mitchell led mini-seminars as part of Loyola United for Racial Justice Week.

September 17- Dr. Weishar volunteered at the El Colibri Clinic for immigrants working to rebuild flooded homes in Baton Rouge.

September 18- Dr. Weishar trained eight Loyola students to teach ESL at St. Anthony of Padua Church’s Café con Ingles program.

September 20- Fr. Kammer presided and preached at the Red Mass for Michigan attorneys and judges at the Gesu Parish at the University of Detroit Mercy.

September 20- Dr. Mitchell and Dr. Weishar met with criminal justice reform advocates at the Southern Poverty Law Center. 

October 1- Dr. Weishar spoke at the annual meeting of Burning Bush: Catholic Sisters and Brothers for Peace on the need to have a media strategy when advocating for social justice issues.

October 6- Ms. Donovan and Dr. Weishar participated in the New Orleans Bread or Stones Campaign Listening Post at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. 

October 8- Dr. Weishar volunteered at the El Colibri Clinic for immigrants working to rebuild flooded homes in Baton Rouge

October 12- Ms. Donovan presented the findings of the State of Working MS 2016 to the MS Democratic Caucus in Jackson.

October 12- Ms. Donovan appeared on the Jackson State WJSU radio station’s “The Full Spectrum” to discuss the State of Working Mississippi report. 

October 13-14- Fr. Kammer co-hosted and addressed members of FADICA (Foundations and Donors Interested in Catholic Activities) meeting in New Orleans.

October 14- Dr. Weishar co-presented the findings of Recovering the Human Face of Immigration in the U.S. South, at the Conference on Immigration to the U.S. South.

October 17- Dr. Mitchell and Dr. Weishar met with criminal justice reform advocates at the Southern Poverty Law Center. 

October 21- Dr. Weishar was a guest speaker at the 10th Annual Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans Symposium to End Mass Incarceration.

October 25-28- Dr.  Weishar participated in the annual meeting of the Jesuit Network on Migration held in Guatemala City, Guatemala.

October 26-Fr. Kammer provided a study day in Baltimore to clergy working as Global Fellows with Catholic Relief Services on the writings of Pope Francis.

November 1- Dr. Weishar lectured in Dr. Eileen Doll’s Spanish class. 

November 4-5- The JSRI Advisory Board met at Loyola University New Orleans.

November 11- Fr. Kammer chaired the meeting of the board of the Ignatian Solidarity Network in Arlington, Virginia. 

November 12- At the Archdiocese of New Orleans cluster training on implementing the 9th Synod’s priorities and goals at St. Joan of Arc Church in La Place, Dr. Weishar spoke about JSRI’s Catholic Teach-Ins on Migration.

November 13- Fr. Kammer led a workshop on Catholic Social Thought at the Ignatian Family Teach-In.

November 16- Dr. Weishar spoke about the need to support undocumented immigrant students and their families at the “Solidarity Walk-Out” organized by the Loyola Community Coalition for Social Justice on the steps of the J. Edgar and Louise S. Monroe Library.

December 1- Ms. Donovan was cited in the Child Care Aware report “Parents and the High Cost of Child Care” regarding the Louisiana School Readiness Tax Credits.

December 2- Ms. Donovan delivered an advocacy presentation to “Against Injustice, Why Poetry” English class at Loyola.

December 13- Fr. Kammer gave a reflection at an Advent observance for the Archdiocese sponsored by the Loyola Institute for Ministry.

December 14-16- Ms. Donovan attended the Economic Analysis and Research Network (EARN) Conference in St. Louis.

January 4- Ms. Donovan moderated a community forum on the ACA at the Corpus Christi-Epiphany Community Resource Center.

January 10- Ms. Donovan delivered a presentation on the ACA to the Justice & Beyond Coalition.

January 10- Dr. Weishar participated in a meeting of criminal justice reform grantees of the Langeloth Foundation in NYC.

January 11- Ms. Donovan participated in a panel discussion on child food insecurity in New Orleans hosted by Second Harvest Food Bank.

January 12- Ms. Donovan published an op-ed in the Advocate related to the proposed repeal of the ACA.  

January 13- Fr. Kammer gave an address on mercy at the mid-south catechetical conference.

January 18- Dr. Mitchell and Dr. Weishar provided testimony to members of the Governor’s Justice Reinvestment Task Force.

January 19- Dr. Weishar participated in the Service Learning Fair.

January 19- Fr. Kammer addressed immigration strategies in a faculty panel on Trump's  Administration.

January 19- Ms. Donovan and Fr. Kammer discussed the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on WWL’s morning Eyewitness News.

January 24- Dr. Weishar participated in a meeting of the Board of Directors of Seashore Mission in Biloxi, Mississippi. 

January 26- Dr. Weishar was interviewed by Fox 8 News about President Trump’s Executive Order to lengthen the border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

January 27- Dr. Weishar and Ms. Baudouin organized a meeting of faith-based prison reform advocates in Nashville, Tennessee.

January 28- Ms. Donovan and Dr. Weishar helped organize a press conference on the deadly consequences of repealing the Affordable Care Act in Lafayette Cemetery #1. Fr. Kammer emceed the event.

February 6- Fr. Kammer participated in a board meeting in New York City of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps.

February 9- Emerson National Hunger Fellow, Sakeenah Shabazz, presented the SNAP Story Bank Project to Loyola students, faculty, staff, and community members.

February 21- Fr. Kammer presented on the work of JSRI to the board of the Loyola Alumni Association.

March 3- Dr. Weishar and Ms. Bauduouin led a Methodist Teach-In on Migration at First Grace United Methodist Church in New Orleans.

March 10- Dr. Weishar and Dr. Mitchell along with Mr. Ronnie Moore of Cornerstone Builders, led an Ignatian Teach-In on Mass Incarceration at the ACJU Honors Consortium Meeting.

March 14- Dr. Weishar, Fr. Kammer, and Ms. O’Dowd completed the final report on Recovering the Human Face of Immigration and released it in collaboration with the University of Florida.

March 15- Fr. Kammer delivered an address on gratitude for the Loyola Lenten lecture series.

March 15- Dr. Weishar participated in a meeting of the board of directors of Seashore Mission in Biloxi.

March 16- Dr. Weishar participated in a planning meeting of the Welcoming America immigrant and refugee collaborative.

March 27- Dr. Mitchell and Dr. Weishar participated in a meeting of Louisianans for Prison Alternatives held at the Southern Poverty Law Center in New Orleans.

March 28- Dr. Weishar presented a workshop on Advocating for Criminal Justice Reform for Dr. Christian Bolden’s honors seminar on criminal justice.

March 28, 2017- Fr. Kammer participated in the Archdiocesan Peacewalk on Loyola’s campus, introducing participants to the work of JSRI for social justice.

March 31-April 1- JSRI Advisory Board met on campus. 

April 4-5- Fr. Kammer chaired the meeting of the Board of Directors of the Ignatian Solidarity Network in Dallas. 

April 7- Dr.  Weishar participated in a meeting of the Criminal Justice Committee of the Louisiana Interchurch Council.

April 18- Dr.  Weishar provided written testimony in support of ending juvenile life without parole (JLWOP) in Louisiana at a hearing of the Louisiana Senate Committee on Criminal Justice at the State Capital.

April 21- Dr. Weishar participated in a planning meeting at the New Orleans Worker regarding strategies to defeat an anti-sanctuary bill being considered in the Louisiana legislature.

April 26- Dr. Weishar testified in opposition to an anti-sanctuary city bill at the Louisiana House Committee on the Administration of Criminal Justice.

April 27- JSRI staff met with Matt Cuff, policy advisor for the Jesuit Conference of Canada and the United States, to coordinate work on criminal justice reform. 

April 30-May 2- Fr. Kammer, Dr. Weishar, Ms. Chamberlain, board member Sal Longoria, and College of Law Professor Hiroko Kusuda participated in the social justice orientation in New Orleans for second-year novices of the Jesuit Central and Southern Province.

May 2 & 9- Dr. Weishar participated in two visioning sessions of the New Orleans Interfaith Sanctuary Movement at First Grace Methodist Church.

May 10- Fr. Kammer chaired the Ignatian Solidarity Network award ceremony in Washington, DC, honoring Patricia McGuire, President of Trinity Washington University.

May 12- Ms. Baudouin and Dr. Weishar attended a faith-based shareholders meeting on private prison reform in Nashville.

May 12- Ms. Chamberlain received the 2017 Ignatian Award for the Outstanding Graduate Student presented at the Loyola Baccalaureate Mass.

May 13- Fr. Kammer presided and preached at the 2017 Baccalaureate Mass for the Loyola Institute for Ministry.

May 15- Fr. Kammer participated in the board meeting for the Jesuit Volunteer Corps/USA in Chicago.

May 15- Dr. Weishar led a workshop on the Catholic Response to the Death Penalty at St. Anthony of Padua Church in New Orleans.

May 23- Fr. Kammer participated in the Mission Committee meeting of Christus Health in Dallas.

May 30- Dr. Weishar testified to Louisiana Senate Judiciary Committee A in opposition to a bill that affects immigrants' right to marry in LA. The committee deferred the bill, thus killing it. 

May 30- Dr. Weishar helped deliver a letter from over 230 faith leaders and people of faith from across Louisiana in opposition to an anti-sanctuary city bill. Fortunately, Senate Judiciary Committee B rejected the bill.

May 31- June 2- Fr. Kammer participated in the convening of U.S. Academic Centers on Catholic Social Thought, meeting at Georgetown with Cardinal Turkson and the Vatican's new Dicastery for Integral Human Development.

May 31- Dr. Weishar participated in a planning meeting for the Symposium on Systemic Change in LA, which will be held on October 20, 2017, at the Tracey Catholic Center in Baton Rouge.

June 6- Dr. Weishar participated in a meeting of grantees at the Langeloth Foundation in NYC.

June 11-13- Fr. Kammer served as the commentator for the assembly of the Catholic Health Association in New Orleans.

June 13- Jesuit scholastic Brendan Gottschall, SJ, began his summer internship with JSRI.
