The Ninth Year [2015-2016]

In addition to participating in advocacy efforts across the Gulf South States and continuing to publish articles in the JustSouth Quarterly, E-newsletter, and other external publications, JSRI fellows gave the following presentations:

Fall 2015- Summer 2016

August 3- JSRI co-hosted the Catholic Teach-In on Migration at Holy Name of Jesus School.

August 6- Dr. Weishar spoke about JSRI’s report Too Much for Too Many: What Does It Cost Families to Live in Louisiana at the New Orleans City Council Hearing on the need to establish a living wage for New Orleans city contract workers.

August 10-12- Fr. Kammer and Dr. Weishar participated as executive committee members in a dialogue on “Recovering the Human Face of Immigration” with 25 religious leaders from across the country in Atlanta, GA at Ignatius House.

August 21- Dr. Mikulich was the keynote speaker at the 2015 Cross-Systems Summit "Collaborating to Achieve Equity" hosted by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. 

August 24- Dr. Sue Weishar participated in a meeting of the Board of Directors of Seashore Mission in Biloxi, MS

August 28- Dr. Weishar organized the Katrina Immigrant Workers and Homeowners Press Conference and Rally. Fr. Kammer,SJ, and Ms. Baudouin spoke at the press conference, thanking immigrant workers for helping to rebuild New Orleans and calling for comprehensive immigration reform.

September 2- JSRI hosted a screening and discussion of Big Charity.

September 2- Dr. Weishar helped facilitate a discussion on resources for immigrant children at the Unaccompanied Immigrant Children Service Providers Workshop organized by Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans and the Hispanic Apostolate.

September 10-11- Fr. Kammer and Dr. Weishar travelled to Atlanta,GA for a meeting of the Advisory Board of the “Recovering the Human Face of Immigration” Project.

September 16- Fr. Kammer met with the Mission Committee of Christus Health in Dallas, TX.

September 17- Fr. Kammer and Dr. Mikulich were interviewed by Al Jazeera America for a television program addressing the Pope’s visit to prisoners in Philadelphia.

September 20- Dr. Weishar trained eight Loyola Service Learning volunteers who will teach ESL to adult immigrants at Café con Ingles.

September 20-21- Fr. Kammer and Ms. Baudouin attended the Jesuit Volunteer Corps board meeting in Baltimore, MD.

September 24- Dr. Weishar presented a talk on Our Nation’s Broken Immigration System at the Louisiana State Museum/Cultural Alliance of the South.

September 25-26- Dr. Weishar and Dr. Mikulich were interviewed by WDSU about Pope Francis’ U.S. visit.

October 2- Ms. Baudouin and Dr. Weishar participated in a faith-based shareholder’s meeting on human rights at the Interfaith Center for Corporate Responsibility in NYC.

October 3- Dr. Mikulich addressed mass incarceration at the annual meeting of Pax Christi Illinois.

October 5- Dr. Weishar spoke to Dr. Liv Newman’s freshman classes about the refugee crisis and the Church’s teachings on migration.

October 7- Ms. Donovan presented JSRI's “Too Much for Too Many” report to the New Orleans Wage Board.

October 16- Dr. Weishar and Service Learning students met with immigrant fasters supporting the President’s Executive Action on immigration.

October 18-20 - Fr. Kammer gave three talks on social analysis to the East Coast Jesuit Social Ministries in NJ.

October 23- Fr. Kammer addressed Catholic Social Thought at the University of Dallas Ministry Conference. 

October 26- Fr. Kammer led an audio conference call on Catholic Social Thought for alumni of the Ignatian Colleagues Program. 

October 29-30 - Dr. Sue Weishar attended the annual meeting of the Jesuit Network on Migration in San Salvador, El Salvador.

November 2- Fr. Kammer led a day of reflection for staff of Catholic Charities in Yakima, WA.

November 10- Dr. Weishar joined a demonstration led by Stand for Dignity in front of the New Orleans food stamp office to protest Louisiana's denial of food stamps to 65,000 people.

November 10- Dr. Weishar, Fr. Kammer, and Ms. Baudouin led a Catholic Teach-In on Migration at St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church.

November 17- Fr. Kammer led a session on social justice for new faculty in the Ignatian Pedagogy Seminar.

November 16-17- Dr. Weishar was interviewed by WGNO News, New Orleans Times Picayune and WVUE about resettling Syrian refugees. 

November 20- Catholic News Agency interviewed Dr. Weishar for an article on the Syrian refugee crisis.

December 1-2- Fr. Kammer gave talks in Dallas to the Christus Health Executive Formation program. 

December 2- Dr. Weishar was interviewed on the JustLove radio show about the Syrian refugee crisis and the need for the U.S. to remain a safe haven for persecuted people.

December 4- Dr. Weishar met with local activists to plan a rally in support of Syrian refugees.

December 12- Ms. Donovan spoke at the Gillespie Memorial Community Breakfast about family economic security at the First Unitarian Universalist Church.

December 16- Dr. Weishar and Fr. Kammer addressed a visiting group of students from Santa Clara University on the social realities of post-Katrina New Orleans. 

December 24- Dr. Weishar warned that the Obama administration's plans for immigration raids would be a nightmare for immigrant communities in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.

January 5- Fr. Kammer addressed a visiting group of Iona College students on the social realities of post-Katrina New Orleans. 

January 7- Dr. Weishar organized a conference call with Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D., where faith leaders discussed their support of S. 2123, the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act.

January 8-10- Ms. Baudouin and Fr. Kammer led the mid-year social justice retreat for 80 Jesuit Volunteers working throughout the South and Midwest. 

January 11- Ms. Donovan presented the results of Too Much for Too Many to the Income Inequality Study Group at the Community Church Universal Unitarian of New Orleans.

January 14- Fr. Kammer led a strategic planning committee meeting for the Ignatian Solidarity Network in Baltimore, MD. 

January 21- Dr. Weishar presented a webinar about Organizing a Catholic Teach-In on Migration in Your Faith Community for the Loyola Institute for Ministry.

January 23- 26- Ms. Donovan and Fr. Kammer attended the Catholic Social Ministry Gathering in Washington, D.C.

January 25 - Fr. Kammer received the Harry A. Fagan Roundtable Award  honoring his contributions and achievements in social justice.

January 25- Dr. Weishar participated in a meeting of the board of directors of El Pueblo/ Seashore Mission in Biloxi, MS.

January 27- JSRI hosted a screening and panel discussion on The Whole Gritty City.

February 11- Ms. Donovan co-planned and Fr. Kammer presented at the Catholic Day at the Capitol in Jackson, MS.

February 14- Dr. Weishar provided a training and orientation to Loyola Service Learning students who will teach ESL this semester to adult immigrants at Café con Ingles.

February 17- Fr. Kammer presented Pope Francis’ Joy of the Gospel as part of Loyola’s Lenten series.

February 24- Dr. Weishar submitted testimony at the New Orleans City Council Hearing meeting on the need to change policies regarding the adjudication of young offenders as adults in Orleans Parish.

February 28- March 1- Ms. Donovan attended the Anti-Hunger Policy Conference hosted by the Food Research and Action Center in Washington D.C.

February 29- Fr. Kammer attended the Los Angeles meeting of the board of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps.

March 4- Dr. Weishar attended the quarterly meeting of The Micah Project at St. Peter Clavier Parish.

March 5- Fr. Kammer provided two presentations on Catholic Social Teaching to Dallas deacons.

March 16- Fr. Kammer attended a meeting of the Mission Committee of Christus Health in Dallas.

March 17- Ms. Donovan and Fr. Kammer presented the findings of the first JustSouth Index at a press conference on Loyola's campus.

March 29- Ms. Donovan presented at the 2016 Health Summit: Creating an Agenda for a Healthy Louisiana.

March 30- A letter to the editor from Fr. Kammer was published in the New Orleans Advocate.

April 4- Ms. Donovan discussed Not All Tax Credits Are Created Equal with Louisiana Senate Revenue and Fiscal Affairs Committee.

April 4-8- Ms. Baudouin and Fr. Kammer attended the Jesuit Conference on Crossing Borders, Finding New Ways in Santo Domingo.

April 5- Ms. Donovan attended a statewide leaders meeting for Together Louisiana coalition.

April 10- Dr. Weishar spoke at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Biloxi, MS, inviting parishioners to a Catholic Teach-In on Migration on April 26.

April 15- Dr. Weishar spoke with members of the Evangelical Immigration Table on anti-immigrant legislation being considered in Louisiana.

April 15-16- The JSRI Advisory Board met.

April 19- Fr. Kammer spoke to the Jesuit Schools Network in San Antonio about Social Analysis.

May 16-17- Dr. Weishar and Fr. Kammer co-led a meeting in New Orleans of the Advisory Board for Changing the Human Face of Immigration. 

May 17- Ms. Donovan served as a panel judge for Senior Thesis Presentations on Policy Issues at Sci Academy, a Collegiate Academies School.

May 21- Fr. Kammer celebrated the closing Eucharist for graduates of the Loyola Institute for Ministry. 

May 24- Dr. Weishar testified opposing HB 1148, a bill prohibiting so-called “sanctuary cities,” at a hearing of Louisiana Senate Judiciary Committee A. Later that day the committee voted to defer the bill, thus killing its chances of passing.

May 25- Dr. Weishar participated in a press conference to protest the inhumane and unconstitutional conditions facing incarcerated men and women held at the Orleans Justice Center.

May 26- Emily Polvado began work as a JSRI summer intern. She will assist with tracking alleged human rights abuses at privately owned and/or operated prisons and immigration detention centers.

May 31- JSRI held a Catholic Teach-In on migration at Blessed Trinity Church in New Orleans. 

June 4- Ms. Donovan and Fr. Kammer appeared on WWNO’s All Things New Orleans radio show to discuss recently released CFPB rules related to payday lending.

June 6- Dr. Weishar participated in a meeting of Langeloth Foundation grantees in New York City.

June 6- Fr. Kammer conducted a day on Catholic social thought for education and pastoral leaders for Loyola Institute for Ministry.

June 9- Fr. Kammer presented on living wages in Louisiana to the Archdiocesan Priests Council 

June 10- Dr. Weishar discussed the severe negative impact of adjudicating teens as adults on Christopher Sylvain’s Health Issues.

June 14- Fr. Kammer addressed the AJCU communications group concerning the mission of Jesuit education.

June 16- Ms. Donovan attended the Louisiana Partnership for Children and Families legislative wrap-up.

June 16- Dr. Weishar helped organize the Community Input Session on the N.O. DA’s youth transfer policies.

June 17- Fr. Kammer led a strategic planning meeting in Baltimore for the Ignatian Solidarity Network.

June 30- Ms. Baudouin and Dr. Weishar organized an NYC meeting of faith-based shareholders on human rights in private prisons.

July 7- Ms. Donovan had a guest column published in The Advocate related to proposed federal regulations for predatory lending. 

July 11- JSRI released a statement on the contributions of refugees in the United States and Louisiana.

July 18-19- Fr. Kammer led workshops on social analysis for international Jesuit Volunteers at Scranton U.

July 19- JSRI staff presented at the annual conference of the Society of St. Teresa of Jesus. 

July 20- Dr. Weishar attended a meeting of the Board of Directors of Seashore Mission in Biloxi, MS. 

July 27-28- Fr. Kammer led workshops on social analysis and Jesuit justice for the University Leaders’ Summit of the Ignatian Solidarity Network.
