John Biguenet, Robert Hunter Distinguished Professor
John Biguenet is the author of Oyster, a novel, and The Torturer’s Apprentice: Stories, as well as four other books and a number of plays, including The Vulgar Soul and the widely honored Rising Water. Past president of the American Literary Translators Association and an O. Henry Award winner for short fiction, Biguenet chronicled for The New York Times in both columns and videos his return to New Orleans after its catastrophic flooding and the efforts to rebuild the city.
John P. Clark, Ph.D., Gregory F. Curtain Distinguished Professor
John Clark is a tenth-generation New Orleanian, descended from a forced laborer sent to Louisiana in the 18th century. His many books in ecological and social thought include a translation and commentary on geographer Elisée Reclus’ 19th century Voyage to New Orleans. He was the basis for the character “Prof. Clark Johnson” in the Swamp Thing comic books series (Issues 112, 113, 121 - 123, 1991-92). His alter-ego, pre-Ancientist philosopher Max Cafard, wrote The Surre(gion)alist Manifesto and Other Works.
