Troubleshooting my resident hall network connection.

Here are some quick steps to test your network connection.

1. Verify that you are getting an IP address from our DHCP server.

For Win 98/Me computers:

Go to the strat button and then the run command. Type winipcfg. A window will open and you will see a release button and a renew button. Click on the release button first, then when your cursor arrow returns, click on the renew button. It should give you a new IP address.

For Win 2000/XP computers:

Go to the start button and then the run command. At the prompt, type ipconfig /release. Then type ipconfig /renew. It should give you a new IP address.

Note: Loyola IP addresses start with 141.164.xxx.xxx. If your computer has a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx, your computer is having trouble receiving an IP address. Move to step 2.

2. Check your connection. Make sure that your cable is inserted properly into the port in your computer as well as in wall jack. Reseat the cables to ensure a good connection. Go back to step one and try again. If it still does not work, go to step 3.

3.In resident hall rooms where jacks are not shared by two students, it is normally the left data port is the one students should use. There are however, a few rooms where the right port was made active. If step 1 and 2 have failed and you do not share a jack, try moving the cable to the port on the right side. Repeat step one. If you receive an IP address, your connection is working. If you do not or if you are sharing a jack with another student, call Client Services at ext. 2255 or click here to submit a job request. We will contact you to set a service appointment.
