Dial In Setup for Win 98/Me/NT
Windows - Introduction
This booklet contains the information that you will need in order to establish a Dial In connection (using a modem) or an Ethernet connection (via direct connection) between your Windows based (Win98/Me/NT/2000/XP) computer and Loyola University's Internet gateway.
Connecting to the Internet
At Loyola, computers connect to the Internet by way of either a dial in connection or via an Ethernet connection. All Residence Hall rooms are equipped with an Ethernet connection. Modems are not necessary to connect in the residential halls, but an ethernet card is. . Ethernet cards are available for purchase at the bookstore in the Danna Center. Please check your computer's manual or user guides to determine which type of card you require. The Loyola's network speed is 10 Mbps. Your card must support 10 Mbps for access.
What you will need
You will need a computer running Win98 or better. Information Technology recommends that those wishing to connect to the Internet adhere to the following minimum requirements:
Win98 or better computer with a 600 (or better) processor
128MB RAM
15GB Hard Drive
56k (or better) data modem for a Dial In connection, or an Ethernet installed card and an Ethernet cable (RJ-45 category 5) for a direct network connection.
While it is possible to establish an Internet connection with less than the minimum requirements, this minimum specifications is recommended for a healthier network performance.
How Can I find out if My Computer Meets the Minimum Requirements?
To see the amount of RAM your computer has, go to the Start button. Go to Settings and select Control Panels. Then double click on the System icon. A dialog box will appear to show you computer type and the amount of memory.
To determine the hard drive space, open the My Computer icon on the desktop. Click once on the 'C:' drive icon. Use the right button on your mouse and choose 'Properties' when the dialog box appears. The disk capacity is shown. This is the size of your hard drive. If the available memory is less than 20MB, you will not be able to install the software required to establish an Internet connection.
OK, I'm Set - Now What?
If you are trying to make a Dial In connection, please go to the Dial In Setup chapter of this booklet. If you are trying to establish an Ethernet connection (on campus), then please go to the Ethernet Setup chapter of this booklet.
If you want to understand these terms before you go any further, then please go to the Terms section of this booklet.

Windows Ethernet Setup 98/Me/NT
Install a Network Ethernet Card
For information regarding installation of an Ethernet card, please refer to the installation manual for your particular card. Information Technology recommends having an experienced service technician install your Ethernet card.
When the computer is turned on, it will automatically detect the new device you just installed. A window will appear to ask you to install the Ethernet Card Driver software. If available, choose the Windows Default option. If not, then choose the "Have disk" option, and use your driver diskette that came with the Ethernet card. Insert the Windows CD or diskette asked for. Select OK. You will be asked if you want to copy driver files. Select Yes. If a DHCP message pops up, select yes.
The Physical Connection
The first thing you need to do is make the physical connection. Plug one end of your Ethernet cable into one of the RJ45 ports on your wall jack. (Always try the Ethernet port on the left first.) It is very similar to a typical phone jack (RJI 1) except that the RJ45 module is wider. It should snap when you plug it in.
Next, plug the other end of the cable to the RJ45 port on the back of your computer. It should also make a small snap noise when you plug it in. These connectors should only be able to fit one way into the ports, so do not force it. It is possible to bend the pins located in the port.
If you have trouble with these connections, make sure you orient the cable so that the metal tabs at the end of the cable face the pins inside of the port.
If your computer is turned on, you should see a "link" light come on. It should be located on the back of the Ethernet card near the port you just plugged into. Some cards do not have a link light. If yours does not, then your physical connection is complete. If you have a link light, and it does not come on; make sure your computer is turned on. If it is turned on, remove the Ethernet cable and reinstall it making sure one end snaps into the port on the wall jack and the end snaps into the port on you Ethernet card. If your link light still fails to come on, call x2255 for assistance.
To Setup the Network Protocol for Win98/Me/NT
Go to the Start button and select Settings. Then choose the Control Panel.
Double click on the Network Control Panel icon.
Remove any other drivers for LAN access, if previously added (example: IPX/SPX compatible Protocol or Net BEUI) by highlighting with one click, then click Remove. (Windows NT users will have to click on the protocol tab first.)
If TCP/IP is not installed, install it by doing the following:
Click on Add button. Select Protocol and click on Add . This should open the Select Network Protocol window.
Click on Microsoft and click on TCP/IP on right. Then click OK .
Click once on the protocol that you have installed (e.g.,"TCP/IP). Click on the Properties button.
You will see several different tabs. Choose the IP Address tab.
Select Obtain an IP address automatically. This will enable your computer to use DHCR DHCP enables your computer to automatically find a DHCP server on the network and to get an IP address assigned to it. Enabling DHCP will allow you to connect to any network jack located on campus without having to change any network settings.
Choose the Gateway tab. Remove any existing gateways, if any are listed. The DHCP server will assign one automatically.
Choose the DNS tab. Choose the disable button. The DHCP server will automatically give you a DNS entry also.
Once this is done click OK and exit out of the control panel. You will be asked to restart your computer. Please do so. When your computer reboots it will receive an IP address from a server. It may take a couple of minutes to get an IP address.
If you have gone through the above steps, but still cannot get to the network or you have moved your computer to another building, your computer may be having trouble getting an IP address. When this situation occurs it is recommended that you follow the instructions in the "Still Cannot Connect?" section of this booklet.

Still cannot connect?
If you have gone through the Ethernet set up, but still cannot get to the network or you have moved your computer to another building, your computer may be having trouble getting an IP address. When this situation occurs it is recommended that you follow the instructions below.
For Win 98/Me computers:
1 . Go to the start button and then the run command. Type winipcfg. A window will open and you will see a release button and a renew button.
2. If this is the first time you are using DHCP on the network click on the renew button. If you have moved your machine from one building to another click on the release button. Once it has release the old IP, click on the renew button. It should get a new IP address assigned to it.
For Win NT/2000/XP computers:
1. Go to the command prompt. Type ipconfig /renew if you are connecting via DHCP for the first time. If you have connected DHCP before and have just moved your computer to another building type ipconfig /release. After it releases the old IP address type ipconfig /renew. A new IP will be assigned.
