Macintosh - Introduction
This booklet contains the information that you will need in order to establish a PPP connection (using a modem) or an Ethernet connection (via direct connection) between your Macintosh computer and Loyola University's Internet gateway.
What you will need
A Macintosh computer running System 8.0 (or better). Information Technology recommends that those wishing to use their Macintosh computers to connect to the Internet adhere to the following minimum requirements:
Macintosh G3 a PowerPC processor running system 8.0 (or better)
32MB RAM (built in memory)
1GB Hard Drive
28,800 bps (or better) data modem for a PPP connection, or an Ethernet port.
While it is possible to establish an Internet connection with less than the minimum requirements, IT's Client Services will only directly support those computers that meet the above standards.
How Can I Find Out if My Computer Meets the Minimum Requirements?
To see the amount of RAM your computer has, select About This Macintosh from under the Apple menu. A dialog box will appear to show your computer type and the amount of Built In Memory. The Total Memory is shown as well. However, these factors in Virtual Memory schemes and is not considered Real RAM.
To determine the hard drive size, open the hard drive icon. Under the View command, choose by Icon - the used and available sizes will be shown in the upper portion of the window. Add these numbers together to get the size of your hard drive. If the available amount is less than 20MB, you will not be able to install the software required to establish an Internet connection.
OK, I'm Set - Now What?
If you are trying to use a modem, please go to the PPP Connections with a modem section of this booklet.
If you are trying use a direct connection (on campus), then please go to the Ethernet Connections on campus section of this booklet.
If you want to understand these terms before you go any further, then please go to the Terms section of this booklet.
PPP (Dial in) Connections with a modem
These instructions are for Macintosh G3 and Power Macintosh computers. Please read the introduction regarding the minimum supported Macintosh computer configurations. In addition to these requirements, you will need to have a Loyola Internet Account. All newly arriving students are issued this information, which consists of a login name and a password. Contact IT's Client Services if you have questions.OT/PPP (the software needed to connect) comes already installed on most current Macintosh computers.Under the apple, select control panel.
- Open the TCP/IP Control Panel.
- Under connect via set it to connect PPP.
- Under configure set it to Using PPP Server. All of the information will be supplied by the server, except for the name server in the search domain field. Type in loyno.edu.
- Close the TCP/IP control panel.
- Open the modem control panel.
- Select the port you modem is connected to.

- Click on the connect button. It should dial in and connect to the Loyola University system.Once connected you will need a web browser to access the Internet. If you do not have one, refer to the section called Using Fetch.
Ethernet SetupCheck
Your Hardware for an Ethernet Connection on Campus
Check to see what type of Ethernet hardware your Macintosh requires. Most newMacintosh computers come with the Network Interface Card already built in, soonly a RJ-4 cable is needed to connect to the wall jack. Some older PowerMacs need a transceiver. The transceiver port will look like a small trapezoidshaped connector. Transceivers and cables can be purchased from the bookstorelocated in the Danna Center.
The Physical Connection
Plug one end of your Ethernet cable into one of the RJ45 ports on your wall jack. It is very similar to a typical phone jack (RJ11) except that the RJ45 module is wider. It should snap when you plug it in.
Next, plug the other end of the cable to the RJ45 port on the back of your computer. It should also make a small snap noise when you plug it in. These connectors should only be able to fit one way into the ports, so do not force it. It is possible to bend the pins located in the port.
If you have trouble with these connections, make sure you orient the cable so that the metal tabs at the end of the cable face the pins inside of the port.
If your computer is turned on, you should see a "link" light come on. It should be located on the back of the Ethernet card near the port you just plugged into. Some cards do not have a link light. If yours does not, then your physical connection is complete. If you have a link light, and it does not come on; make sure your computer is turned on. If it is turned on, remove the Ethernet cable and reinstall it making sure one end snaps into the port on the wall jack and the end snaps into the port on you Ethernet card. If your link light still fails to come on, call x2255 for assistance.
Configuring TCP/IP
1. Open the TCP/IP control panel.
2. Under the connect via setting choose Ethernet.
3. Under the configure setting choose Using DHCP Server.
4. If you are asked to give a DHCP Client ID, leave it blank.

6. Close the TCP/IP Control Panel. At the prompt, choose save. You may be asked to restart. Do so.
You're configured to use the campus network. Just click on your web browser to get access to the Internet. If you do not have one, go to the section on Using Fetch in order to download one.

FTP & How to Put Your Webpages on the Loyola Server - (Macintosh)
Unlike Windows, the Macintosh operating system does not come with a built in FTP program. FTP is available through the Terminal program located in the Utilities folder; however, unless you are familiar with this program it is strongly recommended that you download a freeware FTP application such as Fugu or Fetch.
Fetch can be obtained free of charge for Educational/Charitable organizations at the following URL: http://fetchsoftworks.com/Licensing/edustore.application.html
Fugu can be obtained at the following URL: http://rsug.itd.umich.edu/software/fugu/download.html
This program is freeware courtesy of University of Michigan.
In Fetch, under Host: enter "loyno.edu". User ID is your email login and the password is your email password. Once you have successfully logged in to your account, drag your html files into the folder called public_html.
In Fugu, Connect to: enter "loyno.edu". Username would be your email login, disregard Port
and Directory. After you click Connect at the bottom right it will prompt you for your password, enter your email account password. Fugu is easier to understand and operate. In the left column locate your html files. Once located, drag those files over to the right column into your public_html folder.
