Honors Student Life

Honors students are not segregated at Loyola but are fully integrated into the university as a whole. Although they may elect to live in an honors living unit on the eleventh floor of Buddig Hall, not all of them choose to do so. At least two-thirds of their courses are taken outside the Honors Program in their major and minor and as electives courses. Many Honors students are active in university clubs, intercollegiate and intramural sports, fraternities and sororities, and student government activities. Honors students do, however, commonly develop a strong sense of bonding and camaraderie among themselves, as they share intense intellectual experiences, study and relax together in the University Honors Center, and participate in Honors co-curricular activities. Many Honors students credit this camaraderie with their peers as one of the important benefits of participation in the University Honors Program.

Special Recognitions for University Honors Students

Students who successfully complete the full University Honors Program, or the Honors Certificate Program, wear distinctive white stoles during the graduation ceremony. In addition, they receive a special designation in the graduation program and an inscription on their transcripts and diplomas. The graduating Honors senior with the most distinguished academic record, including highest grade point average in Honors courses, is presented with the University Honors Program Outstanding Student Award in memory of Dr. Michele Saint Romain.  The graduating Honors senior with the most active contributions to the University Honors Program, to the University, and to the community at large receives the University Honors Association Service Award.

One special privilege given to Honors students is priority registration with seniors, which allows them to enroll in the courses of their choice.
