First-Year Seminars

A Loyola education teaches you more than facts, theories, skills, and subject matter. It helps you understand the connections among disciplines and values that inform the liberal arts and sciences. The courses you take throughout your years at Loyola emphasize these modes of learning and challenge you to think critically about ideas in the context of social justice. Our First-Year Seminars are an excellent way to begin your Loyola education.

What are First-Year Seminars?

The seminars are special-topics courses conducted by leading teacher-scholars. All are small classes grounded in an interdisciplinary approach to knowledge and an exploration of values. They provide unique classroom experiences, as well as co-curricular events, field trips, dinners, films, and other social gatherings.

Are First-Year Seminars Required?

Yes. All first-year students will take a seminar, either in fall 2009 or spring 2010. The seminars count as regular three-credit courses and will apply to your Common Curriculum requirements.

When you send in your matriculation deposit, you will receive an email telling you which semester you have been selected to take your seminar along with the course titles and descriptions. You will be asked to list your top five choices in priority order and send them to us as soon as possible. We cannot promise that you will be placed in a seminar of your choice, but we will make every effort to do so.
