FYE Book and Theme Selected
Mountains Beyond Mountains, by Tracy Kidder
After extensive input from students, staff, and faculty, the FYE Committee has selected the book Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder as the common reading for the incoming first year class. The book is a fascinating account of Dr. Paul Farmer's work related to issues of healthcare as a tool for social justice and activism. In addition, the theme Purpose Beyond Self has been chosen for the 2008 - 2009 academic year. This theme offers curricular and co-curricular potential especially when partnered with the common reading. The committee is working on several campus-wide activities and hopes faculty and staff will incorporate the theme and book into their classrooms, organizations, and other activities this next academic year.
