CBFWS Jobs - Abeona House Child Discovery Center
Special Education Assistant
The work study student will help enrich learning experiences for 1 of 4 children with special needs. The student will meet with the child's therapists and supervisor to understand the best ways to support student learning while giving space for children to be independent and develop strong peer relationships. Often this means facilitating play, and bridging those relationships through direct and thoughtful interaction.
PURPOSE OF JOB WITHIN ORGANIZATION
Abeona House is an inclusive child care program with low teacher to child ratios. Despite this, our children with special needs would often benefit from more direct interaction focused on deepening play, language building, extending play, and building relationships. These Work Study students will support these interactions and by extension, the development of these young children in the least restrictive environment.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT TRAINING AND ORIENTATION
A background check and confidentiality agreement will be completed on site.
- Comfort with young children, infant-4 years old
- The utmost respect for people with exceptionalities
- Enjoyment of young children
- Experience with people with disabilities
Students in early intervention and social work programs are especially suited for this work.
The CBFWS student will report to the lead teacher in each classroom as well as the direct supervisor.
TRAINING & ORIENTATION PROVIDED
Students will observe children in their classroom and get an understanding for the age of development and nature of disability to better understand what might be required. If the student feels like the child would be a good fit for their experience and interest, we will set up a meeting with the child's parent and/or therapists to identify specific ways the student can assist the child. All students will receive orientation about the organization and its work.
