The Environmental Studies Practicum

The Environmental Studies Faculty consider the Practicum to be one of the most important and exciting components of our curriculum. Students select a member of the Environmental Studies Faculty to serve as mentor and advisor to the design and completion of an independent project -- which may be conducted off-campus with other organizations. The section below describes the Practicum in more detail.

Requirements for the Practicum

  • The student shall complete an independent studies course form for the semester in which the project takes place.
  • The student shall submit an practicum agreement form (signed by the student, faculty facilitator and supervisor) before the project begins
  • The student shall complete 120 hours of work on the project in the case of an internship.
  • The student shall submit a midterm report to the faculty facilitator.
  • The supervisor shall submit to the program chairperson an internship/practicum supervisor's form at the completion of the project. This shall be forwarded to the faculty facilitator.
  • The student shall complete a paper in which he or she reports on the practicum and explain how the project contributed to his or her environmental studies education. (The length of the paper is to be negotiated between the student and facilitator).
  • The faculty facilitator shall assign the student a grade for the course after reviewing the supervisor's form and the student's paper.
