Preservice requirements are things volunteers must do before they start volunteering at an agency. These often include things like trainings, background checks and paperwork. In some cases, preservice requirements are more extensive, involving health screenings, drug tests, interviews and applications. Agency listings contain information on preservice requirements.
Students and agencies must ensure that all preservice requirements are completed before service begins. Agencies may hold training sessions or orientations on campus.
The Office of Service Learning has developed two short online training modules for students:
Partner agencies and/or service learning professors have the option of making these online trainings a preservice requirement.
Professors working with partner agencies on course projects should determine whether students will need to complete any preservice requirements before starting on the project. If so, arrangements must be made to complete these requirements.
