Freret Neighborhood Center

The Freret Neighborhood Center, located 1 mile from Loyola’s campus, works with neighborhood residents of all ages. The Center gathers people together to learn new skills, improve the community, and have fun. Some of the activities offered to neighbors include afterschool programs for youth (at neighboring Evans Park) and the Community Computer Lab, a free computer lab which provides tutoring for basic computer skills. FNC is a founding member of Loyola's Community Partners Council.

Service learners help support the ongoing operations of FNC by assisting with the Afterschool Program (at Evans Park) or the Community Computer Lab. Afterschool program activities may include tutoring, arts, crafts, informal sports activities and various other projects for youth who attend. Students assisting in the Computer Lab will provide computer help to clients from the local community.

*Students serving at FNC during the week are expected to complete 1 shift per week over the course of the semester (for a total of 10 shifts). Since the program is 12 weeks, students can miss two shifts with prior notification given to supervisor. Therefore, students must be willing to serve more hours than most service learning courses require.

Loyola service learners will become members of a local community and learn about the needs and assets of people living in the Freret/Milan neighborhood. Service learners can improve their communication skills, problem solving abilities, and ability to interact with diverse populations. Loyola students will also be given training on how to work with youth.
