Freret Neighborhood Center

The Freret Neighborhood Center, located 1 mile from Loyola’s campus, works with neighborhood residents of all ages. The Center gathers people together to learn new skills, improve the community, and have fun.  Some of the activities offered to neighbors include afterschool programs for youth and the resource center, a free community computer lab which provides tutoring for basic computer skills.  FNC is a founding member of Loyola's Community Partners Council.

Service learners help support the ongoing operations of FNC by assisting in one of the following areas:

  1. Resource Center: Service learners will work with adults to learn basic computer skills, perform light office work and conduct community outreach about FNC activies.
  2. Youth/Afterschool programs: Service learners will help with tutoring and various other projects for youth who attend the Center. Seven devoted service learners are also needed specifically for a new pilot tutoring program, Tuesday - Friday, 4-6:30pm.
  3. FNC Newsletter: Services Learners will help publish a neighborhood newsletter. Working closely with the FNC Communications Coordinator, service learners will generate content for newsletters and videos by interviewing residents. Duties include scheduling and recording interviews, transcribing audio into text, taking photos of programming, assisting with newsletter layout and dissemination.

Loyola service learners will become members of a local community and learn about the needs and assets of people living in the Freret/Milan neighborhood. Depending on the area in which students serve, they can improve their communication skills, problem solving abilities, and ability to interact with diverse populations. Service learners can also learn to generate content for newsletters and videos.
