Catholic Charities: Refugee Services

 

Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans Refugee Services provides resettlement and self-sufficiency services to newly arrived refugees and other immigrants with humanitarian legal status each year.

WHAT YOU DO

Service Learners can choose to work on projects or programs that best fit their backgrounds and interests. Opportunities include:

  • Assistance with Cultural Orientation classes provided at CCANO’s offices in Metairie once a week
  • Translation and/or interpretation assistance in Amharic, Arabic, Burmese, Haitian Creole, Kiswahili, Spanish or Tigrinya
  • Co-facilitating intercultural support groups
  • General programmatic administrative duties including but not limited to data entry, community outreach and developing/maintaining an internal newsletter
  • Assisting employment services team with monitoring referrals and client progress in Career Pathways Program; leading bus orientations with clients 

WHAT YOU LEARN

Loyola Service Learners can increase their cultural competency and gain understanding of the refugee experience in the Greater New Orleans area. Service Learners will have an opportunity to practice their language skills, develop intercultural communication skills, and finish the Service Learning experience with tools and skills that can be used as exemplars for professional and academic settings.

PRESERVICE REQUIREMENTS

1.        Attend a mandatory Volunteer Information Session held by CCANO staff at Loyola and pass
          background check

2.        Must be available 4 hours a week

3.        Proficiency in another language (see above), highly valued, but not required

4.        Must have own transportation to commute to Metairie/Kenner border area
           a.        Priority will be given to those commuter students living in the Metairie/Kenner area
