Environmental SafetyThe area surrounding the campus is environmentally safe. According to the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, Office of Public Health, has certified that tap water is safe for drinking and washing on the east bank of New Orleans (west of the Industrial Canal) and in Algiers. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has done comprehensive sampling of all affected areas (soil, floodwaters and sediments) and conditions are safe to return. Chemical concentrations in samples are below concentrations expected to be of public health concern. Floodwater samples in a few areas away from campus show lead and manganese levels above drinking water standards, but no direct ingestion of that water is occurring. Updated on October 19, 2005 |
