Protecting Yourself

Using common sense safety tactics will make your visit to New Orleans more enjoyable.

  • Use the same prudence that you would use at home with regard to theft and assault.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Check with staff at your lodgings on sections of the city to avoid.
  • Leave your valuables at home or in the hotel safe. Keep bookbags, radios, CD players, etc locked and hidden in the trunk of your car. Out of sight is out of mind.
  • Drive with all car doors locked. Keep windows rolled up whenever possible.
  • Use travelers checks instead of cash.
  • Visit only well known, heavily traveled areas at night. Go out in groups.
  • Lock your car at all times, no matter how long you'll be away from your vehicle.
  • Park in only well lit areas that will still be lit when you get back. Be alert in parking garages.
