Greek Alphabet and Terminology
Greek Terminology
Active- A fully initiated member of a chapter with full privileges and responsibilities.
Alumni- A graduated member of a fraternity or sorority
Bid-An official invitation to join a chapter
Chapter- The local group which represents a segment of the national organization
Intake- The term used to describe recruitment and interviews for NPHC groups
Interfraternity Council (IFC)- The governing body that oversees 5 of Loyolas fraternities composed of members from each chapter and an executive board
Legacy- A student who is the son/daughter, brother/sister, or granddaughter/grandson of a Greek member
Line- The name given to a group of men/women preparing for initiation in to a NPHC fraternity/sorority
National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)- The governing body that oversees 5 of Loyolas historically African American fraternities and sororities composed of members from each chapter and an executive board
Panhellenic Council (NPC)- The governing body that oversees 4 of Loyolas sororities composed of members from each chapter and an executive board
Pledge- This is a term for a student who has accepted the bid of a chapter. After a period of education on the chapters history, traditions and ideals, he/she may be initiated in to the chapter. This period is referred to as pledging, associated or new membership education.
Potential Member- The term used for students seeking membership in to a fraternity/sorority
Recruitment- The period of time where chapters are actively seeking new members in to their chapters
