History of Greek Life

Greek letter organizations have a history as old as the United States of America. Their contributions to American college campus’s are endless and the traditions set forth by their founders have been passed down by centuries of collegiate and alumni members.

1636- Harvard University, America’s oldest college is founded in Cambridge, MA.

1776- Phi Beta Kappa, America’s first Greek letter organization, is founded at the College of William & Mary.

1923- BEGGARS fraternity is the first fraternity founded at Loyola New Orleans and the first social fraternity to be granted permission to be founded at a Jesuit university.

1932- Alpha Delta Gamma is founded as the first national fraternity on Loyola’s campus.

1959- Theta Phi Alpha is founded as the first national sorority on Loyola’s campus.

2002- Loyola is now home to 13 fraternity and sororities encompassing 18% of all undergraduates.

2004 - Loyola is now home to 15 fraternity and sororities encompassing 20% of all undergraduates.
