Undergraduate + Graduate Commencement

The 2014 commencement ceremony for candidates for graduation from undergraduate and graduate studies in the College of Humanities and Natural Sciences, College of Social Sciences, College of Music and Fine Arts, and College of Business will take place on Saturday, May 10, at 9:45 a.m. in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, located in downtown New Orleans.

Tickets are not required for the commencement ceremonies in the Superdome, and there is no limit on how many guests a graduate may have for commencement. There is no reserved seating in the Superdome. All seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Ceremony Instructions for Candidates

All candidates for graduation must report, already robed, to the Gate A, located on the Ground Level, Poydras Street, side of the Superdome, no later than 8 a.m.

Please note that this entrance is for graduates and special-needs guests only. In accordance with Superdome event policy, all guests, including graduates, are required to pass through a visual check point upon entering the facility. Please do not bring alcohol, cameras, purses, or other personal items to the graduate entrance.

Once inside the gathering area, instructions will be given regarding the ceremony. Official university ceremony marshals and representatives from Student Records will be on hand to assist.

For bachelor’s degree candidates, the tassel on the cap should be worn on the right side until the degree is officially conferred. It should then be switched to the left side. Candidates for master’s and doctoral degrees should wear their tassels on the left throughout the ceremony.

After the processional, upon entering their designated rows, candidates should remain standing until all candidates, faculty, and staff have taken their places. The order of proceedings will be printed in the commencement program. The presentation of degrees will be administered by the dean and associate dean who will instruct candidates to rise at the appropriate time. Presiding marshals will direct candidates to proceed from their seats to the stage. As each name is called, the candidates will proceed to center stage and receive their diploma covers and congratulations from University President Kevin Wm. Wildes, S.J., Ph.D. Bachelor’s degree candidates will then switch their tassels from the right to the left before exiting the stage at the opposite side. Candidates are asked not to exit from the center of the stage and should return to their seat.   All participants should remain in rank throughout the entire ceremony. The event is scheduled to be completed within two hours.

Actual diplomas will be mailed to graduates in June.
