Ceremony Instructions for Candidates

All candidates for graduation must report, already robed, to the Gate A, located on the Ground Level, Poydras Street, side of the Superdome, no later than 8 a.m.

Please note that this entrance is for graduates and special-needs guests only. In accordance with Superdome event policy, all guests, including graduates, are required to pass through a visual check point upon entering the facility. Please do not bring alcohol, cameras, purses, or other personal items to the graduate entrance.  Additionally, selfie sticks are prohibited in the Superdome.

Once inside the gathering area, instructions will be given regarding the ceremony. Official university ceremony marshals and representatives from Student Records will be on hand to assist.

For bachelor’s degree candidates, the tassel on the cap should be worn on the right side until the degree is officially conferred. It should then be switched to the left side. Candidates for master’s and doctoral degrees should wear their tassels on the left throughout the ceremony.

After the processional, upon entering their designated rows, candidates should remain standing until all candidates, faculty, and staff have taken their places. The order of proceedings will be printed in the commencement program. The presentation of degrees will be administered by the dean and associate dean who will instruct candidates to rise at the appropriate time. Presiding marshals will direct candidates to proceed from their seats to the stage. As each name is called, the candidates will proceed to center stage and receive their diploma covers and congratulations from University President Kevin Wm. Wildes, S.J., Ph.D. Bachelor’s degree candidates will then switch their tassels from the right to the left before exiting the stage at the opposite side. After receiving their diplomas covers, candidates are asked to return to their seats. The event is scheduled to be completed within two hours.

Diplomas will be mailed to graduates in June.
