Classical Studies
"Just as Socrates felt that it was necessary to create a tension in the mind so that the individual could rise from the bondage of myths and half-truths to the unfettered realm of creative analysis and objective appraisal, so must we see the need for nonviolent gadflies to create the kind of tension in society that will help men rise from the dark depths of prejudice and racism to the majestic heights of understanding and brotherhood."
"Letter from the Birmingham Jail", Martin Luther King, Jr
Classical Studies is more than the study of the antics of ancient gods. The foundations of Western civilization, philosophy, religion, art, and culture derive from the civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome. The influence of Classical Studies on today's Western culture is inescapable. Without a knowledge of the past, therefore, one cannot fully understand and evaluate the present.
Classical Studies provides a liberal education in the Ignatian tradition that satisfies the passionate and individual aspects of each student.
