Dr. Henne publishes first English translation of Luis de Lión's “El tiempo principia en Xibalbá”

Languages and Cultures Assistant Professor, Dr. Nathan Henne, recently published a translation of Guatemalan author and indigenous activist Luis de Lión’s 1975 novel El tiempo principia en Xibalbá (Time Commences in Xibalbá, Arizona University Press, 2012). This is the first English translation since de Lión’s seminal book was published three decades ago.

The book’s original publication marked an important shift in the middle of Guatemala’s civil war because de Lión was the first fiction writer of this era to identify himself explicitly as Maya, a significant act in the  midst of the systematical violence against indigenous people that swept across the mountain country in the second half of the 20th century.

In 2010, Dr. Henne won a Marquette Fellowship to work on the project.

Time Commences in Xibalbá (Arizona University Press, 2012) is available for purchase at the Loyola Bookstore. More information about the book can be found here
