LIEP Curriculum

LEVELS OF INSTRUCTION
The Loyola Intensive English Program offers English instruction at the intermediate and advanced levels.  Click here to see a sample class schedule.

  • Classes meet five days per week for a total of 20 weekly hours.
  • Instruction focuses on communication skills in spoken and written English as well as developing a deeper understanding of English grammar.
  • At the beginning of each semester, students will be tested and evaluated for placement at the appropriate level.
  • Students who show sufficient progress may continue enrolling in LIEP courses until they complete the program.

Intermediate Level
At the intermediate level, you are introduced to all aspects of English through carefully guided class exercises which rapidly improve your listening skills, verbal fluency, writing skills, and reading comprehension. Audio and video materials, field trips, and cultural activities are designed to increase your language skills so that you can independently participate in U.S. life on campus and in the community.

Advanced Level
The advanced level offers an exciting, integrated, and academically rigorous curriculum. Through a wide range of written assignments and oral presentations, and through discussions, lectures, debates, and dramatizations, you are made thoroughly familiar with U.S. customs and culture.

PILOT PROGRAM: LOYOLA COURSES FOR CREDIT
Students with advanced English proficiency may qualify for the Pilot Program.  These students take two LIEP courses for academic credit while enrolled in two other academic classes. An application for admission as an academic student, along with a high school or university transcript, must be submitted to Loyola University. For more information, visit the Pilot Program website.

TUTORS: VALUABLE FRIENDS
A unique and very popular feature of LIEP is the tutorial program. The tutors are advanced Loyola students, all native speakers of English, who have a special interest in language teaching and in other cultures.

You meet individually with your tutor twice a week for additional conversation and practice outside the classroom. Your tutor can advise you about day-to-day concerns such as shopping and entertainment and answer any questions about customs and culture in the U.S.

Your tutor often becomes a valuable friend, and many LIEP students keep in touch with their tutors long after they have returned to their home countries.

FACULTY: EXPERIENCED AND CARING

All LIEP instructors have a minimum of a Master’s degree as well as extensive training and experience in teaching English as a second language. They are dedicated professionals who are committed to their students. Because they have traveled and taught abroad as well as in the United States, our instructors are very sensitive to the particular learning styles of students from different countries and backgrounds.

INSTITUTIONAL TOEFL: MEASURING PROGRESS
An institutional TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is administered three times a year: at the end of the two 15-week sessions and at the end of the eight-week summer session.  The institutional TOEFL can be used to guage your progress as you learn English and also for admission to Loyola University.  Not every university accepts the institutional TOEFL; many universities require an iBT score for admission.  LIEP also has designed its own writing and speaking tests, which are used along with the TOEFL to measure your progress at all levels.

CERTIFICATES AND EVALUATION REPORTS

Students who pass their LIEP courses will receive a certificate showing their English level.  All students will receive an evaluation report at the end of each session. At midterm, all students will meet individually with their advisors to receive a progress report including grade scores, written comments by instructors, and advice for how to improve their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS FOR GROUPS
LIEP also offers specially designed programs for groups from schools, agencies, or other organizations, including international corporations interested in improving the English skills of their employees.

Loyola University: A great place to study English!

The Loyola Intensive English Program is part of Loyola University New Orleans, a Jesuit university founded by the Society of Jesus in 1912.

Loyola University New Orleans, which consistently ranks among the best regional universities in the southern United States by U.S. News and World Report, enrolls over 4500 students from all 50 states and over 40 countries. Degrees are offered in 60 undergraduate fields and 10 graduate and professional programs, including MBA, JD, and LLM programs.

Loyola’s campus is located in the beautiful university area of New Orleans. The city’s historic streetcar stops in front of the university and runs downtown to the world-famous French Quarter in approximately 30 minutes. It is also located across the street from Audubon Park, pictured below. Audubon is a great place to exercise, ride a bicycle, and enjoy a picnic with friends. It is also home to the Audubon Zoo!

LIEP STUDENTS HAVE ACCESS TO ALL LOYOLA UNIVERSITY FACILITIES
As an intensive English student, you have full access to the library, health center, residence halls, dining facilities, and recreational facilities.  You are encouraged to borrow books, CDs, and DVDS from the Loyola library!  The university also offers a lot of activities: concerts, ballet, lectures, theatre, film series, and social events.  LIEP students are encouraged to join clubs, exercise classes, and intramural teams.

Housing

Housing for men and women is available on campus in Loyola’s modern, air-conditioned residence halls. They provide a safe and secure living environment and give you the opportunity to make friends with U.S. students. All rooms are double rooms, and LIEP students are almost always placed with English-speaking roommates. You should apply early since space in the residence halls is extremely limited.  On-campus housing may not be available for students who attend the 7-8 week session during the Fall and Spring.  If you wish to stay on campus during a 7-8 week session during the Fall or Spring, please contact us and we will check availability for you.

Many apartments are available near campus if you plan to stay in New Orleans for a longer period of time. For more information about living off-campus, visit http://loyno.universityrentallisting.com/. We recommend, however, that you initially live on campus. There are several cafeterias on campus which serve three meals daily at moderate prices. There is also a wide variety of inexpensive restaurants in the university area.

If you decide to live on-campus, you will need to fill out out a housing application and contract. This is available as part of your application to LIEP.

Cultural Activities: Learn About the U.S. and Have Fun

LIEP students go to the Barataria swamp on a class trip.

The Loyola Intensive English Program offers you many opportunities to practice English outside the classroom. When you arrive, you will be given an orientation to the program, the university, and the city through tours and other activities.  Field trips and in-class activities will introduce you to U.S. customs, history, traditions, and holidays, as well as the culture of New Orleans.  Our city is world-famous for fantastic jazz, unique food, colorful architecture, and great festivals such as Mardi Gras and JazzFest.

Recent LIEP field trips and activities have included French Quarter tours, swamp trips, Mardi Gras parades, pumpkin carving, Easter egg dying, St. Joseph’s Day altars, New Orleans architecture tours, and the New Orleans Museum of Art.   Come find out why New Orleans has been called one of the most interesting cities in the United States! To see pictures of any of these activities, visit our Facebook page and look under “Photos."
