Superior Education and a Great Location

Our students study English in the stimulating environment of Loyola University New Orleans, a Jesuit university founded by the Society of Jesus in 1912.

Loyola enrolls over 4500 students from all 50 states and over 40 countries. Degrees are offered in 60 undergraduate fields and 10 graduate and professional programs.

Loyola’s 24-acre campus is located in the beautiful university area of New Orleans. The city’s historic streetcar stops in front of the university and runs downtown and to the world-famous French Quarter in approximately 30 minutes.

Across from Loyola is Audubon Park shaded by magnificent live oak trees. In the park, you will find recreational facilities such as running and bicycle paths and the city zoo, rated among the best in the United States.

Audubon Park borders the banks of the Mississippi River, where you can enjoy a leisurely afternoon bicycling, picnicking, or just watching the passing river traffic.

LIEP Curriculum

LEVELS OF INSTRUCTION
The Loyola Intensive English Program offers English instruction at the intermediate and advanced levels.

  • Classes meet five days per week for a total of 20 weekly hours.
  • Instruction focuses on communication skills in spoken and written English as well as a thorough grounding in English grammar.
  • At the beginning of each semester, you will be tested and evaluated for placement at the appropriate level.
  • You may enroll in successive terms until you achieve the necessary English skills to meet your needs.

Intermediate Level
At the intermediate level, you are introduced to all aspects of English through carefully guided class exercises which rapidly improve your listening skills, verbal fluency, writing skills, and reading comprehension. Audio and video materials, field trips, and cultural activities are designed to increase your language skills so that you can independently participate in U.S. life on campus and in the community.

Advanced Level
The advanced level offers an exciting, integrated, and academically rigorous curriculum. Through a wide range of written assignments and oral presentations, and through discussions, lectures, debates, and dramatizations, you are made thoroughly familiar with U.S. customs and culture.

LOYOLA COURSES FOR CREDIT
Intensive English students at the advanced level may qualify to take two LIEP courses for academic credit while enrolled in two other academic classes. An application for admission as an academic student, along with a high school or university transcript, must be submitted to Loyola University. For more information, visit the Pilot Program website.

TUTORS: VALUABLE FRIENDS
A unique and very popular feature of LIEP is the tutorial program. The tutors are advanced Loyola students, all native speakers of English, who have a special interest in language teaching and in other cultures.

You meet individually with your tutor twice a week for additional conversation and practice outside the classroom. Your tutor can advise you about day-to-day concerns such as shopping and entertainment and answer any questions about customs and culture in the U.S.

Your tutor often becomes a valuable friend, and many LIEP students keep in touch with their tutors long after they have returned to their home countries.

FACULTY: EXPERIENCED AND CARING

All LIEP instructors have a minimum of a Master’s degree as well as extensive training and experience in teaching English as a second language. They are dedicated professionals who are committed to their students. Because they have traveled and taught abroad as well as in the United States, our instructors are very sensitive to the particular learning styles of students from different countries and backgrounds.

TOEFL: MEASURING PROGRESS
An institutional TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is administered three times a year: at the end of the two 15-week sessions and at the end of the eight-week summer session. LIEP also has designed its own writing and speaking tests, which are used along with the TOEFL to measure your progress at all levels.

CERTIFICATES AND EVALUATION REPORTS

You will receive a certificate and an evaluation report at the end of each session. At midterm, your advisor will meet with you individually to give you a progress report including test scores and written comments by your instructors. You will be given advice on how to further improve your oral/aural and writing skills.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS FOR GROUPS
LIEP also offers specially designed programs for groups from schools, agencies, or other organizations, including international corporations interested in improving the English skills of their employees.

As an intensive English student, you enjoy the same privileges as other Loyola students with full access to the library, health center, residence halls, dining facilities, and recreational facilities. The university also offers numerous activities: concerts, ballet, lectures, theatre, film series, and social events. The university’s Recreational Sports and Athletics Complex has courts for tennis, basketball, volleyball, racquetball, and handball, a weight room, a jogging area, a swimming pool, sauna, whirlpool, and a steam room. LIEP students are encouraged to join clubs, exercise classes, and intramural teams.

LIBRARY & MEDIA CENTER: IMPROVING READING & LISTENING SKILLS
You are encouraged to borrow resources from the Loyola main library, which maintains a well-stocked selection of books, magazines, newspapers, and research materials such as dictionaries and encyclopedias. You are also strongly encouraged to use the Media Center, which has an interesting selection of documentaries and movies.

Housing

Housing for men and women is available on campus in Loyola’s modern, air-conditioned residence halls. They provide a safe and secure living environment and give you the opportunity to make friends with U.S. students. All rooms are double rooms, and LIEP students are almost always placed with English-speaking roommates. You should apply early since space in the residence halls is limited.

Many apartments are available near campus if you plan to stay in New Orleans for a longer period of time. For more information about living off-campus, visit http://www.loyno.edu/commuters/apartments.html. We recommend, however, that you initially live on campus. There are several cafeterias on campus which serve three meals daily at moderate prices. There is also a wide variety of inexpensive restaurants in the university area.

If you decide to live on-campus you will need to fill out a housing contract, available on the Residential Life website, and submit it to the Center for International Education via email at cie@loyno.edu or fax (+1-504-864-7548).

Cultural Activities: Learn About the U.S. and Have Fun

LIEP offers you many opportunities to practice English outside the classroom. When you arrive, you will be oriented to the program, the university, and the city through tours and other activities. Extracurricular programs introduce you to U.S. customs, history, traditions, and holidays, as well as the culture of New Orleans. Activities include tours of plantation houses, the French Quarter, swamps, museums, beach trips, the Superdome, restaurants, music clubs, and other places of interest. LIEP teachers, staff, or tutors accompany you on these activities. There are also many opportunities to hear jazz, Cajun and Dixieland music, and attend films, lectures, dinners, and many other types of activities both on and off campus.

For more information about life in New Orleans, visit the Center for International Education's website about Life in New Orleans.
