International Student Tax Information

2006 Income Tax Information

All international students who were in the U.S. during 2006 MUST complete tax forms.  Please read the following carefully so that you can fulfill your tax filing obligation.

Who needs to file income tax forms?

Anyone who worked or had a scholarship that covered more than tuition in 2006 must file federal income tax forms by April 15, 2007.  Louisiana state income tax forms are due by May 15, 2007.

I didn’t have a job or scholarship in 2006.  Do I still need to file tax forms?

Yes.  Internal Revenue Service regulations require all nonresident F and J visa holders who were present in the U.S. during 2006 to file tax forms even if you have not worked.  Students who have not received any U.S. income are required to file Form 8843 by June 15, 2007.  You can obtain those forms from CIE or online. This form will only take 5-10 minutes to complete.

How can I file my taxes?

The Center for International Education has purchased, CINTAX, a web-based software program to assist you with filing your federal income taxes.  This program is extremely user-friendly and only takes about 30-45 minutes to complete.  Although the program is web-based, you will still need to print, sign and mail your tax return to the IRS.  In order to use this program you must obtain a password and instructions from CIE.  CIE will also give you instructions on how to complete your Louisiana income tax form.

Please contact Kristy at 864-7550 or by email at cie@loyno.edu to obtain your CINTAX password and instructions.

What if I think I will miss the tax deadline?

Fill out Form 4868, Application for Extension of Time.   Once you have filed for an extension, proceed with the tax filing process through CINTAX.
