International Student Scholarship Banquet: Brasil Sensacional!
Join us as we celebrate Brazilian culture and explore the connections between New Orleans and Brazil!
The Center for International Education and the International Student Association at Loyola University New Orleans invite the Loyola and New Orleans community to celebrate Brazil at the International Student Scholarship Banquet on Thursday, April 18 at 6:00 p.m., in the St. Charles Room located in the Danna Student Center.
The scholarship banquet, in its eleventh year, is an annual fundraiser for international students on F-1 visas who are ineligible for need-based, federal financial aid and most types of scholarships.
Each year, the International Student Association and the Center for International Education, which sponsor the banquet, highlight a country to showcase and celebrate its culture, food and crafts.
This year “Brasil Sensacional!” is the theme and attendees will enjoy a night of Brazilian cuisine, music and dancing.
Music and entertainment will be provided by Casa Samba, which is a traditional Brazilian dance troupe based in New Orleans.
Casa Samba's performances combine traditional music, vocals, theater, dance and drumming to capture the spirit of Carnival in Brasil, Afro-Brasilian traditions and history.
Loyola students Gabby Landry and Akeem Biggs, both Theatre Arts majors, will also be performing an Afro-Brasilian dance.
Dr. Annie Gibson from Tulane University will speak about “Brazil in New Orleans: An Overview of Brazilian-New Orleanian Interactions from the 19th Century to Present.” The banquet will also feature a silent auction with items from around the world.
Annie Gibson holds a PhD in Latin American Studies from Tulane University. Her areas of specialization include Cuban and Brazilian performance cultures and Brazilian immigration to the United States.
Dr. Gibson currently works as a Professor of Practice in the Department of Latin American Studies at Tulane University. She teaches a diverse range of courses in Spanish and Portuguese language and literatures, Latin American migrant cultures and literatures, and performance cultures of Latin America.
