Career Shopping: How to Successfully Use a Career Fair

Career fairs are the shopping malls of career searching. Where else can you learn about new, exciting opportunities just by walking around; discover opportunities you did not know existed; talk face-to-face with numerous contacts from organizations that are actively looking for new employees - all within a couple of hours? This is what career fairs are - organized events with recruiting personnel from multiple organizations, who have identified opportunities to fill for part-time positions, internships, and entry-level, full-time positions. We invite you to shop around, see what is available, practice your communication skills, and increase your chances of starting that great career at the Loyola-Tulane Fall Career Fair on Wednesday, September 30th from 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Tulane's Lavin Bernick Center (LBC).

Be Ready to Market Yourself
Do not wait until you know a fair is coming to prepare your resume. The Career Development Center (CDC) offers a handout on Writing a Stand Out Resume. Why EMPLOYOLA?

Why Do Employers Use EMPLOYOLA?
EMPLOYOLA is a job board specifically for Loyola students. Part of the value of your Loyola education is that employers recognize the quality of Loyola graduates. Over time, the graduates who came before you have built a great reputation on which you can now stand. Because of this, many employers want to recruit students specifically from Loyola before they search for candidates in the open market. This is why they register employer accounts with EMPLOYOLA. They can market open positions and review resumes of Loyola students.

Why Should Students Use EMPLOYOLA?
Students should be compelled to use this service. It is a wonderful opportunity to have your resume stand out among a smaller pool of only Loyola students, vs. competing on a public job board with the general population. Likewise, have your resume available to employers who are looking specifically for Loyola students.

EMPLOYOLA has several other features that are beneficial to students. While many employers post jobs directly to EMPLOYOLA, the site also pulls in feeds from other job sites to provide students with notifications of openings across the market. EMPLOYOLA also has a job agent feature, which keeps a lookout for jobs with specifications that you have pre-selected for it. For example, if you are looking for a full-time job in the biology field in New York, the agent will find jobs that meet those specifications and notify you when they are posted. That way, you can apply for jobs that interest you with ease the day they are posted, rather than having to remember to search through opportunities and possibly miss deadlines.

With all of these incredible features, how could you pass up the opportunity to build your profile and upload your resume?

Etiquette Tip: Handshakes and First Impressions

Practice your handshake - a lot. It should be firm and confident. Demure lady-like, cold fish, or competitive handshakes can dash your first impression. Make direct eye contact. Flash an infectious and genuine smile. Your handshake needs to say, "I'm glad to be here and I’m delighted to meet you."
