Experience Required

But how do you get that experience? One of best ways to add experience to your resume is to complete an internship…or more than one.

Students may complete internships any semester; however some of the most competitive and prestigious internships are completed during the summer. Why am I telling you this in October? Because many of the nationally competitive, summer internships have application deadlines in the fall. Now is the time to get your research completed, your application materials prepared, and your application submitted.

FALL DEADLINES
Some of the areas that have fall deadlines are major journalism organizations, financial institutions, government agencies, fashion houses, and science programs. Organizations are actively looking for interns in mathematics, business, science, economics, psychology, communications, statistics, research, writing, web design, and much more. Some internships are major specific; many are just looking for skills sets and enthusiasm. Here are just a few organizations with approaching deadlines to get you thinking about opportunities….

American Association of Advertising Agencies

December
American Society of Magazine Editors November
Anadorko Petroleum Corporation Fall
Baxter Healthcare Corporation Fall
Brookhaven National Laboratory November
Central Intelligence Agency November
Deutsche Bank November
Dow Chemical October
Dow Jones November
Dupont December

Essence Magazine

December
Exxon/Mobile Fall
Fantagraphics October
Hallmark October
Inroads (minority internships) Fall
International Radio and Television Society Foundation December
National GEM Consortium November
National Football League Fall
New York Times November
Nike November
Rodale Institute Experimental Farm December
Saks Fifth Avenue Fall
SEO, Sponsors for Educational Opportunity November
Turner Broadcasting System December
U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission October
Wall Street Journal November
The Washington Center Fall

ENGINEERING FIRMS DON’T JUST HIRE ENGINEERS
Think beyond the name of the organization when you start looking into organizations. For example, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is looking for curators, conservators, library support, research, marketing, and business administration. Honeywell needs supply chain management, human resources, marketing, and business. Hallmark offers internships in design, writing, and business. Fantagraphics needs art interns, but also research, proofreaders, and writers.

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
You can research internship opportunities, deadlines, and skills on the Loyola Career Development Center’s website through a link to internshipsusa.com or click on Vault and download the e-book, The Vault Guide to Top Internships. Go directly to companies' websites and look on their career pages. There are so many resources to help you find good opportunities.

GET ORGANIZED
As you put together your hit list of desired internships, create a database management system in Word, Excel, or another program to organize information about the opportunities. Gather contact information, website addresses, pay or other benefit information, application requirements, and deadlines. Use this to keep you on track throughout your application process.

PREPARE YOUR MATERIEALS
While researching opportunities, get your materials ready. Typically, internship applications include resumes and cover letters. However, some internship providers require writing samples, references, essays or personal statements, or portfolios. Be prepared, and give yourself plenty of time to get everything in before their deadlines.

SUPPORT
As you get ready to build your resume with experience, visit the Career Development Center. We can help you with resumes, cover letters, personal statements, search strategies and so much more. Make an appointment with one of our career coaches or stop in during the center's walk-in hours. Additionally, our website offers many resource, which you may access 24/7/365. For instance, OptimalResume, a career development web-based resource that is found at loyno.edu/careerservices, offers resources for resume building, cover letter writing, and e-portfolios.

OTHER DEADLINES
For other competitive internships, deadlines typically occur three to six months prior to start dates. Many, especially smaller organizations and more local internships, advertise in real time -- they identify a need; they advertise to fill it immediately. To know about these opportunities, set up your profile in EMPLOYOLA to alert you to new opportunities that focus on your key words, skills, or industries.

Don’t delay. The internship that may launch your career may be waiting for you.

EMPLOYOLA Tips

SETTING UP OPPORTUNITY ALERTS
Did you know you can set up your EMPLOYOLA account to do some of the searching for you?
After you’ve filled out your EMPLOYOLA profile…

  • Go to Job Search on the top banner.
  • Complete a job search using a few criteria that help define what you are looking for and where. Make your search wide; avoid using too many criteria or the search will be too narrow and eliminate some opportunities that you may be willing to consider.
  • Save your search (click on the Save Search option in blue in the right corner of the search results).
  • A dialogue box will open for you to name your search. Name your search, and then mark the box asking if you would like emails that alert you to new opportunities that fit the criteria of this saved search as they get posted in EMPLOYOLA.
