The Importance of Internships

If someone told you there is one thing you can do to increase your chances of getting a job offer when you graduate by 60 percent, would you do it? That one thing is a strategic internship.

Employers are increasingly requiring internship experience of their new college-graduate hires, and employers are using their intern programs as recruiting pools. Last year, two-thirds of the interns at the 276 employers surveyed by NACE (National Association of Colleges and Employers) were offered full-time positions.* These same employers said that 30 percent of their total new college-graduate hires had internship experience. But the value of internships is more than just a job offer.

TOP 10 REASONS TO GET AN INTERNSHIP:

  1. Test a career choice
  2. Get a job offer
  3. Get the internship experience that many prospective employers require
  4. Overcome the “Experience Required” criterion for positions
  5. Build your resume with projects and experience
  6. Enhance your portfolio with examples of applied knowledge
  7. Receive academic credit (many majors provide one to three hours of elective credit for pre-approved internships)
  8. Bolster graduate and law school applications
  9. Develop your network
  10. Earn money—many internships pay or provide valuable perks

Strategic internships allow students to practice the theories and skills taught in class in a real-world setting and provide an opportunity to polish professional skills, build professional relationships, and ascertain if the career path is a good fit.

We recommend that all students complete at least one internship (paid or unpaid, for-credit or not-for-credit) before graduation—more, if possible. Internship opportunities are posted on Loyola’s PackTRAK, through student listservs, on bulletin boards throughout the campus, and on numerous websites. If you need help finding an internship, contact us at career@loyno.edu or 865-3860 to make an appointment.
