Gap
Year: Exploring Alternatives after Graduation
After four…or five...years of hard work
(and a whole lot of fun), you will soon find yourself
in possession of a brand new Loyola University New Orleans
bachelor's degree. The big question then becomes --
"Now what?" Should you find a job and make
your first forays into the career your college education
has prepared you for? Should you apply to graduate or
professional school before heading out into the workforce?
Or, are you like many students across the country in
need of a break, a gap year to ride out these tough
economic conditions and figure out what you really want
to do?
What is a Gap Year?
If you are considering taking a break before going to
graduate school or starting your career, think about
doing something meaningful. Short term (6-27 months)
in nature, gap years may provide a great way to fill
the space between college and graduate school or the
"real world." Opportunities include temporary
positions, alternative work experience, volunteering
and service, learning opportunities, or traveling. These
experiences not only aid in the career development process,
but can provide experience and direction, as well as
satisfy curiosity about the real world.

ArtSearch and Bridge, Worldwide Music
Connection
Electronic job boards are the want ads
of today. But, wading through them can sometimes feel
no different than running your fingers down the columns
of a newspaper's classified ads. Fortunately, specialty
job boards are making it more efficient and effective
for both job seekers and employers looking for new talent
tofind each other. Many of these job boards are targeted
to identify a specific set of skills and opportunities.
JobProfiles, an electronic library of job search related
information lists 100 such specialty job boards on its
site.
The Career Development Center provides several subscription-based
specialty job boards for students. Two of the newest
are ArtSearch and Bridge, Worldwide Music Connection.
ArtSearch
has listings for full–time, part–time, seasonal, year–round,
and internship opportunities in the performing arts.
Employers range from colleges to professional theaters
and positions range from arts administrators to performers.
Bridge,
Worldwide Music Connection connects
musicians' artistry and skills with opportunities around
the world. Bridge, like ArtSearch, attracts a wide array
of opportunities and types of employers.
What is best about both ArtSearch and Bridge is that
while the primary audience is performing artists, both
sites post opportunities for administrators, business
managers, designers, educators, and more. So whether
you want to be on stage, behind the stage, or in front
of the house, use ArtSearch and Bridge to take advantage
of specialty job boards.
