Gap Year: Exploring Alternatives after Graduation

After four…or five...years of hard work (and a whole lot of fun), you will soon find yourself in possession of a brand new Loyola University New Orleans bachelor's degree. The big question then becomes -- "Now what?" Should you find a job and make your first forays into the career your college education has prepared you for? Should you apply to graduate or professional school before heading out into the workforce? Or, are you like many students across the country in need of a break, a gap year to ride out these tough economic conditions and figure out what you really want to do?

What is a Gap Year?
If you are considering taking a break before going to graduate school or starting your career, think about doing something meaningful. Short term (6-27 months) in nature, gap years may provide a great way to fill the space between college and graduate school or the "real world." Opportunities include temporary positions, alternative work experience, volunteering and service, learning opportunities, or traveling. These experiences not only aid in the career development process, but can provide experience and direction, as well as satisfy curiosity about the real world.
