It's More than Just the Salary

By: Tamara Baker, Associate Director

Graduation is right around the corner and you finally got the job offer you've been waiting for. Congratulations! The only thing left to do is sign on the dotted line, right? While many graduates are tempted to accept the initial offer (and understandably so), it is important to realize that there is still plenty of room to negotiate, even in this challenging economic climate. In fact, now more than ever, employers need to make sure they are bringing in the best talent and must be willing to compensate accordingly. At the same time, the pool of qualified candidates is flooded, making negotiations a bit tricky. That said, realize that negotiation is not only okay, but in many cases an expectation of the employer.

Experts offer the following tips for negotiating in these economic times:

  • Do your homework! Research typical salaries for someone with similar experience in your industry. Websites like salary.com can offer some guidance. Other research methods include asking local professional associations and looking at similar job postings.

CDC Support This Summer and Beyond

It's time to say good bye to graduating seniors and hello to vacation! This is the last Career Development Center newsletter for the year, but that doesn't mean our office is closed for the summer. Although we don't hold weekly workshops or walk-in hours during the break, the Career Development Center is open Monday - Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 4:45 p.m. and we are ready to assist you in any way we can with your career planning needs. Summer is a great time to call 865-3860 to make an appointment with a career counselor - many times we can see you the same day.

Can't make it into the office during regular business hours? No problem! Help is only a click away on our EMPLOYOLA website. On EMPLOYOLA you can find information and support 24/7/365 for resumes, cover letters, job leads, and much more. If you are graduating, you still have access to the center. Log on to our e-library in Vault, complete career assessments in CareerBeam, investigate international job leads and resumes styles through GoingGlobal, search for alumni in another city through CareerShift, and set up job search agents in EMPLOYOLA. Your username and password will be valid for one year after graduation. There is no time limit on dropping us a line, giving us a call, or making an appointment for a quick job search-related question, resume review, or pep talk. So let us know how you are doing, and have a great summer!
