DESCRIPTION: 21Sep5, 4:30 PM. Chief Al Morris, 67. Chief of the Northside Skulls, a bone gang that marches on Mardi Gras day in elaborate handmade skeleton costumes, asked that we invite the "entire city" to meet him on Fat Tuesday morning outside the old Blandin Funeral Home Building in historic Treme an 5AM. Chief Morris says, come Katrina, Rita, or anything else. "The Bones will march!" Mr. Morris has been working throughout the neighborhood, helping folks recover from the past storm and preparing for the storm to come. Says his business is mostly word of mouth. The barter system is in place, and Chief Morris is a Renaissance man of sorts. Beside carpentry, his marketable skill set includes, musician, tailor, and barbering. Behind him is the tattered steeple of historic St. Augustine Church. Harold Baquet photo
