Programs and Services

Academic Counseling & Assessment

Each student is individually assisted in formulating a personal strategy for achieving academic success. The plan may involve Academic Resource Center tutoring or referral to other university services.

  • Individual assessment of the student's learning strengths and weaknesses.
  • One-on-one academic counseling based on the student's specific needs.

Tutorial Services

Tutoring Across the Curriculum: Academic Resource Center provides free peer tutoring for undergraduates under the supervision of the professional staff. Before being assigned to a tutor, students meet with an academic counselor to determine the best course of action.

  • Individual tutoring in introductory common curriculum and major courses.
  • Individual tutoring in many advanced common curriculum and major courses.
  • Study Groups are offered for common curriculum and major courses.
  • Call 865-2990 to make an appointment with an academic counselor or stop by our center in Monroe Hall 405.

 

Services for Nontraditional Students

Individualized assessment of learning strengths and weaknesses and assessment of foundation in writing and math skills by an academic counselor are provided.

  • Individual writing conferences between the student and an Academic Resource Center writing consultant.
  • Individual tutorials in math with Academic Resource Center counselors and/or math tutors.

 

Services for Graduate Students

The Academic Resource Center and Disability Services at Loyola are available to help graduate students succeed as they pursue their advanced degrees.  Services are free and can be scheduled to meet your needs. 

Academic Resource Center services include individual assessments, referrals, and academic counseling. Workshops and individual coaching on:

    • Time Management
    • Memorization Techniques
    • Note Taking Systems
    • Stress Management
    • Interpersonal Communications
     

The Office of Disability Services offers additional support for students with special needs. 

    • Academic counseling to students with a variety of learning differences, such as dyslexia and AD/HD
    • Verification of documented disabilities to faculty and other university departments
    • Assistance in obtaining physical and/or academic accommodations for students with documented disabilities
    • Advocacy services
    • Special assistance such as note taking or transcriptions
    • Writing consultants for assigned papers

 

Study Skills

The Academic Resource Center offers a one-hour course in study skills called Protocols of Learning, SPST A105, as well as individualized study skills instruction and non-credit weekend and evening seminars for all undergraduate students. Protocols of Learning is designed to allow the students to apply skills to their current course work. The syllabus is designed with input from the students taking the course. Topics may include time management, note taking, memory, effective reading, critical thinking, learning styles, library, and research skills.

 

Fall & Spring Enrichment

The Fall and Spring Enrichment programs are designed to assist entering freshmen and transfer students in meeting the academic demands of their first semester at Loyola. Students take a study skills course called Protocols of Learning (SPST.A105) and meet once a week with an academic counselor.
