Frequently Asked Questions
1. Am I required to audition?
Yes. Admission to music requires every candidate to complete a satisfactory performance audition, in addition to normal university admission. This audition also serves as a basis of consideration for awarding music scholarships.
2. What is the difference between the Performance Track and the Non-Performance Track of the Music Industry Studies Program?
The bachelor of music degree with emphasis in music industry studies is designed for the performing musician who wishes to combine music performance with music industry studies. The bachelor of science degree in music industry studies is designed for the business student with limited performing experience who wishes to combine a liberal arts curricula with music industry studies.
3. How do I apply to the Music Industry Studies Program?
Along with fulfilling the application requirements with the Office of Admissions, entrance into the music industry studies program is subject to the following requirements. Students interested in the bachelor of music degree in music industry studies must successfully audition for the Loyola University College of Music and Fine Arts. Students interested in the either of the non-performance degrees in music industry studies are encouraged to attend an interview for admission. Interviews are held in conjunction with music audition days. It is also required that students applying to these tracks send a portfolio of their experiences in the music industry to the Office of Admissions. The portfolio may include a resume, pictures, essay, etc. For example, send us flyers, programs, recordings, or any evidence of your experience and interest in the industry. Students may want to use the application essay as a way to express their intent to pursue music industry studies.
4. When should I audition?
Students complete the audition process during the fall or early spring semester prior to fall entry. Auditions for admission may be completed as early as one year before the intended date of enrollment. Auditions are conducted during published dates only. The College of Music and Fine Arts cannot accommodate requests for individual auditions.
5. Where should I audition?
All candidates are required to schedule their auditions on one of the published audition dates. Out-of-state applicants may send a cassette or videotape; however, priority for music scholarships is given to students who perform live auditions.
6. Should I wait to be accepted by the university before auditioning?
University admissions procedures and College of Music and Fine Arts auditions take place simultaneously. You are encouraged to initiate application to the university as soon as possible. December 1 is the academic scholarship priority deadline. Please be advised that music scholarships cannot be awarded until admission to the university is complete.
7. How are music scholarships awarded?
Music students from the College of Music and Fine Arts are eligible for talent-based scholarships annually for music majors. These awards vary according to the students performance competence, potential for continued musical and academic progress, and the needs of the College of Music and Fine Arts.
8. When is the scholarship deadline?
The music scholarship deadline is March 11 . The priority deadline for academic scholarships is December 1.
9. What should I prepare for my audition?
Auditions are normally 10 to 15 minutes in length. Depending on the performance area, you may be asked to perform solo selections (at least two of contrasting mood and style), technical exercises (scales, arpeggios, etc.), sight-reading, or improvisation. For composition majors, you will also be required to submit a portfolio of compositions. Audition activities include music theory and piano placement exams.
10. Do I need an accompanist?
Music will provide an accompanist for scheduled auditions. Please indicate this under Audition Information on the College of Music and Fine Arts Application for Admission.
11. May I audition on more than one instrument?
Yes. With prior notification, students may audition on as many instruments as they like.
12. Who will hear my audition?
A panel of three to five music faculty members will adjudicate your audition. Comments and ratings are for internal use only, and the auditions are closed to the public.
13. May I bring my parents to the auditions?
Yes. Parents are encouraged to attend the deans meeting for parents which is held at the same time as the auditions. Information on university life, degree programs, financial aid, and admissions will be provided.
14. Do I have to major in music in order to be considered for a music scholarship?
Yes. Music scholarship recipients must major in music.
15. Do I need to audition to minor in music?
Yes. Students who minor in music must audition for admission into the College of Music and Fine Arts.
16. When is my audition application due?
The College of Music and Fine Arts must receive audition applications anytime prior to the audition date. Students will receive confirmation and detailed information following receipt of your application.
17. Can I receive advanced placement in class piano and music theory?
Return to the TopYes. We administer placement tests in piano and music theory at our campus auditions. All students are required to take the music theory placement and piano placement exams.
