Subcommittees
Community Partnership Subcommittee
The Community Partnerships Subcommittee exists to develop and maintain relationships between community agencies and the university that are mutually beneficial to both parties. This includes matching, fostering, and nurturing partnerships that match academic interests with the needs of the community.
Academic year 2005-2006:
1. Continue to strengthen relationships with the existing 8-10 Community Partners.
2. Work with Campus Ministry to hold the first Community Partners reflection.
3. Plan first Community Partners orientation (Summer 2005).
4. Work with faculty development and student engagement committees to plan a Service Learning Fair.
5. Work with faculty development committee to clearly define classroom expectations, learner objectives and community partners' needs.
6. Develop a public relations campaign that highlights faculty, students, and community partners. For example, create a service learning column in the Maroon that highlights faculty, students and community partners. Work with the local media to cover service learning events and successes. Also, work with the Loyola paper to highlight service learning activiites.
Evaluation Subcommittee
The mission of the Evaluation Subcommittee is to support the Office of Service Learning by developing and overseeing the formative and summative evaluations of service learning activities with attention to the voices of university students, faculty, administrators and community partners.
Academic year 2005-2006:
1. Continue collection of evaluation data from participating students, faculty, and community partners.
2. Implement efforts to increase student and faculty participation in evaluation.
3. Compile midyear evaluation report for the use by OSL Director and SL Advisory Committee in monitoring progress and addressing areas of immediate concern.
4. Compile an end-of-year evaluation report to document progress for submission to CAPHE and University administrators.5. Work with subcommittees and OSL to review evaluation process and modify elements as appropriate.
Faculty Development Subcommittee
The mission of the Faculty Development Subcommittee is to support the mission of the Office of Service Learning by promoting awareness of Service Learning among faculty, participation of faculty across the disciplines in Service Learning, and recognition of faculty incorporating Service Learning into their curricula.
Academic Year 2005-2006:
- Conduct a section during New Faculty Orientation on Service Learning.
- Conduct a workshop in the spring for all faculty considering incorporating Service Learning into courses.
- Write an "On the Record" section on Service Learning for the Maroon.
- Encourage faculty to visit Service Learning sites, incorporating methods explored in Spring 2005.
- Plan to develop a mentoring system among faculty participating in Service Learning.Continue to promote and develop reflection on the Service Learning experience in courses in which it occurs.
- Find out what are the difficulties and obstacles to participating in Service Learning.
Student Engagement Subcommittee
The mission of the Student Engagement Subcommittee is to support the mission of the Office of Service Learning by raising awareness of Service Learning as an integral component to education of "the whole person," to engage in honest, active dialogue about the state of Service Learning and to act as ambassadors for Service Learning within the Loyola Community as well as at local/state/regional/national levels.
Academic Year 2005-2006:
- Encourage students to request service learning opportunities from teachers - plan an Awareness Campaign with flyers, banner and booth.
- Revise student brochures and put in mailboxes for incoming students.
- Request an article on Service Learning be placed in the Maroon.
- Schedule a Reflection on Service Learning Forum and incorporate it into a JusticeConference.
- Provide a list of faculty participating in service learning initiatives and distribute it at a SL Information Fair.
- Plan a ceremony to recognize students who participated in SL.Distribute questionnaires and brainstorm ideas based on comments to better serve the community.
