Our Projects

At this point, we have 10 active projects. Some projects will appear, disappear, merge or be changed to fit our city's new needs and LUCAP's available resources. We're on the lookout for creative ideas and new projects, so please stop by the LUCAP office in the Danna Center basement.


Building and Rebuilding


Habitat for Humanity What Habitat works with the East St. Tammany Habitat for Humanity organization to build affordable homes for low income residents of the metro New Orleans area.

Shrockin' What This project works with the St. Bernard Project to make gutted homes in St. Bernard Parish livable again. Be prepared to take a home from the studs to a place a family can call home once again. Rebuilding tasks include hanging sheetrock, mudding, painting, and finishing work. Having a large group help a homeowner with this satisfying job is a great learning experience for volunteers that brings residents ever closer to the homes they remember.

Hunger and Homelessness

Hunger Relief What Make lunches and bring them to the Ozanam Inn, a homeles men's day center and shelter in downtown New Orleans. Volunteers make conversation with the clients of Ozanam Inn and reinforce the idea that all people have dignity.

Tutoring and Mentoring

CARE What CARE stands for Children Are Reason Enough. This program tutors and mentors grade school children at the Israelite Baptist Church in Central City. Volunteers help with basic school work and provide positive interaction with the students.

Brassroots What Brassroots is a music tutoring program that works with the band program at Sophie B Wright Middle School. Volunteers are needed both with musical experience and without.

SMILE What Students Moving Into the Lives of the Elderly brings student volunteers to the Uptown Shepherd Center to dine with the edlerly members of the center and converse with them. Combat ageism and show that all people have dignity at all ages.

Advocacy

Environmental Action Program What Environmental Action works to educate & advocate for environmental justice. They focus on recycling on campus, conservation on the Gulf coast, and various enviornmental issues. They will continue their annual GaiaPalooza an Earth Day celebration this year.

Worker Justice Program What Worker Justice Program is an advocacy group dedicated to the promotion of equitable labor conditions for all New Orleans workers at the Hope House. Learn legal research Current projects include awareness-raising, worker outreach in the day-laborer community, and volunteering weekly at the New Orleans Worker Justice Coalition.

Students Seeking Solidarity What Students Seeking Solidarity (SSS) is committed to working for international peace through justice. The biggest project is the yearly trip to Fort Benning, Georgia to the SOA/WHISC Peace Vigil, and events on campus leading up to that trip. For more information, contact Annie Halbert

Programs on Hiatus

Voice for the Voiceless What Voice for the Voiceless is a project dedicated to raising awareness about a spectrum of issues (especially those related to Hurricane Katrina) to the individuals and organizations in positions that can better invoke change. Volunteers are expected to apply personal experience, historical knowledge, and a sociological perspective to bring light to concerns on behalf of those who cannot do it themselves.
   
God's Vineyard What God’s Vineyard is suspended due to violence in the area surrounding the project. God's Vineyard works with boys and young men to make and bottle hot sauce, the proceeds of which will provide lifelong support to this group of boys and aid them in the growth and harvesting of peppers, and the production and sale of St. Thomas hot sauce. Tutoring and mentoring are growing aspects of this project.
   
Moratorium Campaign What Moratorium Campaign works to encourage support of a national campaign to place a moratorium on capital punishment until its racial and economic biases can be examined.
   
Esperanza What Esperanza served our new Latino community with ESL classes on Loyola's campus. This was a joint effort between our univeristy and the Hispanic Apostolate. These classes are expected to resume at Tulane University.
