Mullahy Biology Endowed Fund for Undergraduate Research

Life at the surface of an ephemeral pond
The Rev. John H. Mullahy, S.J., chaired Loyola's Department of Biological Sciences for more than 20 years.  In 1978, faculty, students, and alumni of the Department of Biological Sciences established an endowed fund as a tribute to Fr. Mullahy's dedication to involving undergraduates in original research.  By 1985, the Mullahy Fund had reached a point where funds could be used to support student research projects.

The Mullahy Biology Endowed Fund for Undergraduate Research has made an outstanding contribution to supporting over 150 students in original scholarly research for over 16 years.

The Department of Biological Sciences is committed to strengthening this research experience by increasing the number of students who can participate in research by developing new research programs with the Mullahy Biology Endowed Fund

Our goal is to increase the Mullahy Biology Endowed Fund for Undergraduate Research from it's current value of $160,000 to $250,000.  At this level, the endowment will allow us to accomplish the following –

  • maintain and increase annual support for student research projects
  • involve students in research who currently cannot be supported by the Fund
  • fund a research seminar series to bring eminent biologists to our campus
