Making the Middle Ages Fun for Teachers and Students

by Mrs. Lee
The inspiration for this work came from the Summer Institute of the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities. The course was Making the Middle Ages Fun, and was taught by Dr. Julian Wasserman from Loyola University.

I have taught this material in 7th grade for years, and I have created many interesting and valuable instructional strategies and methods of assessments. I was inspired to be even more creative and to let the computer help me in teaching the myths, stories, and even the historical background necessary for an understanding of the literature.

What follows is a computer search that I found very helpful in giving the students a "feel" for the Middle Ages, and a project that students love to do in Norse mythology.
There is also a link to a castle project that my 7th grade students worked on while we were studying Arthurian myths using Rosemary Sutcliffe's The Sword and the Circle.  After completing the Middle Ages search to learn about castles, they designed their own, and then added scenes from the stories.
I am currently working on putting more ideas and projects online for these topics.
